David DISMUKES Obituary

DISMUKES, David Payne

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, and friend, David passed away peacefully at home in Falls Church, VA from cancer on August 4 with his family at his side.

David was born on December 10, 1944 in San Antonio, Texas. He moved to Austin shortly after and graduated from Austin High School in 1963. His summers were spent volunteering at Austin Sunshine Camps. He completed pre-pharmacy studies at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Pharmacy in 1973. While studying, David worked as a med tech at Shoal Creek and Breckenridge Hospitals in Austin. David joined the family business, Dismukes Pharmacy, in Austin where he served the community for nearly 3 decades, including years as a compounding pharmacist. He joined Omnicare late in his career and worked there until retirement in 2010. He also belonged to and was active in the Texas Pharmacy Association and other professional organizations.

David enjoyed aviation, was involved in Boy Scouts with his son and grandson, and volunteered as a pharmacist for Caritas of Austin. He had a huge appreciation of the outdoors and was fearless in exploring new sports (surfing, sky diving, and roller coaster riding). Besides being a thrill seeker, he was a prolific practical joker and had a great sense of humor. David had many creative and artistic talents, particularly photography, painting, and wood work.

In 2011, David moved to the Washington, D.C. area with his daughter Melissa Pore's family where he volunteered with the Boy Scouts and St. Thomas More Cathedral School on an educational satellite project supported by NASA. While volunteering on the satellite project, he was inspired to create space art and learn about amateur radios in space.

David was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Ellen Lucas Dismukes, parents U.S. Army pilot David Payne (deceased in WWII) and Mildred England Dismukes and beloved adoptive father William Ira Dismukes, and brother-in-law Juergen Kuschnik.

David is survived by his daughters Melissa Pore and son-in-law Robert David, Heather Hardeman and son-in-law Britt, son David Christian, granddaughter Courtney Ellen, grandsons William Ford, Travis David, and Waylon Cole, aunt Mary Martha Bou-Chebl, sisters-in-law Sherri Hartman, and Gaye Lucas and a multitude of friends who loved him dearly.

A memorial service will be held at St. Theresa's at 4311 Small Drive in Austin, Texas on Thursday, August 7th at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following in the church's Family Center. Father Larry Covington will be officiating. A private burial service for immediate family will take place at a later date. The family appreciates all the love and support from our many friends. David's life was always focused on his family, so the family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, any contributions in his memory be made to the Caritas of Austin (caritasofaustin.org).

There were so many qualities we loved and admired about Dave, it is hard to know where to begin. He was kind and thoughtful, generous and loving, funny and clever,a devoted husband and father, and a true and loyal friend. He was one of the hardest workers we have ever known, but he never complained. We hope he found some peace and rest in his retirement. He deserved it.

Dave was one of the good guys in a white hat and we are so honored and blessed to have known him, Judy and all the children. We send his family love. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. We are so sorry for your loss.
