David Erthal Obituary

David "Pops" Henry Erthal of Austin Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and comfort of his family on December 21, 2024 at Austin's Christopher House. He was born in Carlinville Illinois on October 25, 1941 to Stan and Lucille Erthal. Left to cherish Davids's memory are his beloved soulmate for life and wife of over 61 years, Carmen Erthal; his brother Don(Carmen Strang)Erthal of Jacksonville Ill; his children Cricket(Chuck)Hudson of Charleston SC and Chris(Marci)Erthal of Austin Tx; His grandchildren: Alexis(ConnerSparks)Erthal of Santa Rosa Beach Fl, Payton(Colin)McCabe of Washington DC, Mackenzie Hudson of Washington DC, Carson Hudson of Charleston SC and his great granddaughter Harper Isabel McCabe. He was preceded in death by both parents.

David grew up in Greenfield Illinois, a small farming town where he made life long relationships that built his foundation for family, community and kindness. He pursued his undergraduate and graduate work at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the school of Business and Communication. Upon graduation David was employed by IBM in St Louis, Carbondale and ultimately Austin Texas in 1974. After 32 years, David retired from IBM in 1996.

Throughout his journey David faced many challenges, yet it was his unwavering determination that allowed him to persevere and inspire others. His fortitude in the face of adversity, combined with his compassion, left a lasting impact on all who crossed his path. He loved music, college sports and road trips always seeking out hidden gems in restaurants. Above all, he cherished the time spent with his children and granddaughters.

In accordance with David's wishes, there will be no memorial service. The family appreciates your understanding and support during this time. We are profoundly grateful for the devoted care and compassion provided by the medical personnel at St Davids South and Christopher House. In lieu of flowers friends may make a donation in David's honor directly to Christopher House hospiceaustin.org

David was the ultimate Longhorn fan. I enjoyed time with him (and Carmen) at many UT basketball games. I was invited to his home many times to watch games and talk sports with him. I appreciate the kindness he showed me, especially during some challenges the last years. David, I'll be there for Carmen and will keep her busy. I know you'll send many a burnt orange sunset to let your family know you're watching out for them.
