Denese Todd Obituary

Denese Todd, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many, left us peacefully on January 27, 2024, at the age of 94.

Denese Leach Whiteman was born in Ohio and went to Florida for many years, as a second home and eventually primary home. She graduated from John B Stetson University, near Daytona Beach, Florida, with a degree in elementary education. Teaching school was a passion of hers and she particularly enjoyed working with special education students. She shared her gift and taught school in several different states.

Denese met Richard Todd, her future husband, in Petoskey, Michigan, Richard's hometown. She was working in a children's shop at a resort and Richard was on summer break from school. They were married during Richard's senior year at Michigan state. They had two children, Pam and Craig, who they adored. The family had a very adventurous lifestyle. Moving frequently due to Richard's job, they eagerly explored the popular features of each city they lived in--Cleveland, Detroit, NYC, Houston (3 different times), New Orleans, Colorado Springs, and Irvine, California. During their strong and happy marriage of 64 years, they traveled the world together, reaching every continent. After retirement, they moved to Lakeway, TX to be near their children and grandchildren, which was a gift to all involved for 23 years.

Wherever Denese lived, she formed many fast friendships. She loved people and was always ready to listen, preferring to put the focus on other people. She would remember all of the details that you told her, and she would ask follow-up questions the next time you'd meet. She had an amazing memory and pure heart. People were drawn to her as she was always sincerely interested in any topic they brought up. Compassion and empathy were strong threads in the fabric of who she was. She touched many lives in a positive way.

Denese is preceded in death by her parents, Dennis & Judy Whiteman; her sister, Marilyn Adgate; and her grandson, Eric Bishop. She is survived by her son and his family: Craig, Sandra, Marisa, Brandon Todd and Juniper Carter; and by her daughter and her family: Pam, Larry, Justin, Courtney, Jade and Stone Bishop. She was an amazing mom and grandma and will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank her medical team, including Dr. Gallinghouse, Dr. Chafizadeh, Dr. Bennett and April Hamilton, of JOL Hospice. She valued greatly the care and expert advice they provided over many years.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial at The Lakeway Chapel, Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 11:00 am. (2203 Lakeway Blvd, Lakeway Texas 78734). A reception featuring Italian food (Denese's favorite) will follow the service.
