Elizabeth McDaniel Obituary

Elizabeth Alice Logan McDaniel (Ph.D.) Liz McDaniel (Dr. Elizabeth Logan McDaniel) died April 19, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Air Force Major (Ret.) David Cotter McDaniel; their third son, medical student, William Edward McDaniel; their second daughter, Clinger Business Services owner, Susan Eileen McDaniel Clinger; her brother, Charles Logan; her fiancé, John Campbell; and her life-long friend, Mary Evelyn Young. Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, USAF Col. (Ret.) Donna Elizabeth McDaniel Ketterle; two sons, USAF Col. (Ret.) David Cotter McDaniel, Jr. and advertising executive, Steven Lawrence McDaniel. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Alzena Logan; one daughter-in-law, Libby McDaniel; one son-in-law, German Army Lt. Col. (Ret.) Michael Ketterle; and nine grandchildren. Elizabeth graduated from Harlandale High School and then followed her high school sweetheart career officer husband around the world for 20 years. During this period, she attended colleges all over the US and also learned to fly. She obtained a Bachelor's Degree from UCLA, a Master's Degree from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas in Austin and became the very dedicated mother of five children. (The degrees became especially important when her husband died when their five children were 8-16 years old.) Professor McDaniel, Emeritus, taught at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) where she founded and directed their Graduate School Psychology Program for 25 years. She also authored the internationally used Inferred Self Concept Scale. She had a lifetime Teaching Certificate (Texas Education Agency); a lifetime Credential in Pupil Personnel Services (California State Board of Education); was licensed by the Texas State Board of Psychologists and the Texas State Board of Professional Counselors. She was also a Clinical Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapist, a nationally Registered Health Service Provider in Psychology and a nationally Certified School Psychologist. Liz was very active professionally and served for 14 years as the Delegate for the State of Texas to the National Association of School Psychologists. She then became its Regional Director for 14 west central states for 4 more years. During this period, she served a term as President of the Texas Psychological Association. Meanwhile, throughout her professional career, Liz maintained a limited private practice with offices in Austin and San Antonio. She was devoted to friends in San Antonio, Texas; Warren, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; Hot Springs, Arkansas; Las Vegas, Nevada; Austin, Texas and Europe. She remained very active with family, friends, dancing, bridge, fitness classes and traveling to professional meetings here and abroad as well as to see family and friends - and also for fun! While Hong Kong was one of her favorite destinations, she traveled all over the world and made an average of two trips abroad annually. She really hopes this new experience will be a glorious trip to rejoin loved ones. At her request, Liz will be cremated. Friends are invited to visit her family on Saturday, May 18th from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary on McCullough Ave. Memorial Service, Saturday, May 18, 2013. 3:00 p.m. Porter Loring Chapel. 1101 McCullough Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to NASP Children's Fund, 4340 East West Highway, Suite 402, Bethesda, MD, 20814.
