Matthew Carothers Obituary

Matthew James Carothers, 68, passed away too soon on August 14, 2024. Matt was born on August 29, 1955 in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was a graduate of Round Rock High School and earned dual degrees in Political Science and History from Texas State University. One of his first jobs after moving to Round Rock was working for Parks and Recreation in aquatics.

Matt's love of water led him to proudly serve in the United States Coast Guard, achieving the rank of Petty Officer. He completed his last tour at Coast Guard HQ in Washington, D.C., where he worked under Marine Casualty Review and Investigations. Matt's medals and decorations include Expert Marksman Rifle, Expert Pistol, and the Coast Guard Commandant's Medal and Ribbon for Meritorious Service for helping to implement a computerized tracking system. He was a member of the American Legion and a service-connected disabled veteran. Matt's career included working with veteran organizations where he helped the homeless find employment and assistance in life crises. He had a kind heart and never turned a needy stray away. His generous spirit will be missed.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents, Lt. Col. James Carothers and Mary Nugent Carothers. He is survived by his four brothers: Scott, Steven, Doss, and Michael, three sisters: Valerie, Mary Lou, and Lisa, and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a funeral Mass at St. William Catholic Church in Round Rock followed by burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
