Stephen Johnson Obituary

Stephen Martel Johnson (known as Steve) passed away in the early morning of Sunday May 28. He was born March 24, 1942, in Rugby ND to Martel and Norma Johnson. He and Jan married in 1962 in Minneapolis, MN. Their marriage was a partnership - of love, support for each other and countless celebrations of life with family and friends. He and Jan attended the same, elementary, jr. high and high school- and grew up 4 blocks apart - their fathers both worked for Northwest Airlines. He graduated from the University of MN with a Master of Arts in 1968.

Steve retired in 2002 from 3M in Austin. During his retirement he enjoyed his OLLI classes at UT and spending his summers at the cabin in MN. Steve was a big fan of early rock-n-roll and enjoyed refinishing his classic jukebox. He enjoyed playing bridge with his neighbors and before COVID, with friends at the Brookdale Retirement Center. He was also a fix-it guy and enjoyed the process of maintaining his house, yard, and vehicles. He looked forward to his once-a-month lunches with 3M friends.

Steve was a gentle and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is preceded in death by his parents, Martel and Norma, and his stepmother Van Johnson. He is survived by his sons and their wives Todd (Machell), Mark (Angie), Drew (Jennifer) and six grandchildren, Trent (Jennifer), Kylie, Ross, Lily, Ted and Art and one great-granddaughter, Elanor.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 9th at 12 noon at St. John Neumann Catholic church in Austin, with a lunch to follow at the church. His ashes will be interred mid to late summer at Roselawn Cemetery in St. Paul, MN - with a gathering of friends and family to celebrate his life.
