While finishing my art school degree at UT, Dr. Terry Grieder opened my mind to the richness of prehistoric Rock Art studies in my very own Texas! After graduating, I was allowed to sit-in on Newcomb's 'Archeology of Texas' Anthropology class and was completely smitten to pursue my graduate degree & careeer in Archeology! Serendipitiously finding such charismatic inspiring educators! Extremely grateful!

My Mother wrote Dr. Newcomb a letter many, many years ago, trying to trace my G. Grandfather, a Newcomb. Dr. Newcomb wrote my Mother a letter, telling her his opinion of who he thought my Newcomb famiy was. I've always thought that was so kind of him.

Dr. Newcomb's work is a lasting and immeasurable tribute to his intellectual curiosity and his dedication to learning and teaching. The staff of the University of Texas Press sends to Bill's family our condolences on this sad occasion and our deep gratitude for having been a part of his academic life and legacy.

Dr. Newcomb was a true gentleman. While in law school I worked at the Texas Memorial Museum as a "Laboratory Assistant Technician II," which really meant janitor. These were coveted jobs, passed on from friend to friend. Dr. Newcomb and the entire staff were wonderful people. I treasure my copy of THE INDIANS OF TEXAS autographed by Dr. Newcomb and Hal Story. My sincere sympathy to the Newcomb family.

Thank you for your work at the TMM, I visited several times in elementary school and it made an unforgetable impression on me. Its wonder still worked on me when I would visit as a student at UT. My daughter has been several times now. Thanks.

I met Dr. Newcomb while getting my MA in Anthro at UT in Austin. I have a copy of his 'Indians of Texas' right here in my office. Always a handy and invaluable resource. We are so lucky - most states have to depend on Time Life publications with sepia Indian photos. This is the real deal. He was a great scholar and will be missed.
