My best friend, Katherine, and I were severely allergic to math but we found a friend and mentor in Mr. Kooyman and were regular visitors to his classroom when he wasn't teaching math. We loved his kindness and wonderful sense of humor. Last summer we were lucky enough to have a great visit with him after not seeing him for 40+ years. We will never forget how sharp and funny and wise he was during that visit. I hope his friends and family are comforted by everlasting loving memories of him.

You taught my chemistry class, in which I was always mixing the wrong things together with terrible results. Whenever you'd hear glass breaking, without ever looking up, you'd reach for the class book, dampen your pencil on your tongue, and say "how many this time, Miss Guten Tag?" (I also took German.) Even though I wasn't wild about chemistry I loved being in it because of you.
