Nancy Elizabeth Crisp Garrard

Nancy Garrard Obituary

Nancy Elizabeth Crisp Garrard, 83, passed away Friday, May 1, 2009. Daughter of the late Wilbur Crisp and Leona Weaver Ward, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Wilfred C.J. Garrard; her sister, Joann Crisp Ellert; and brother-in-law, Robert Ellert. She is survived by a daughter, Hannah Garrard; two sons, Geoffrey and Derek Garrard; and four grandchildren, Sarah and Dalton Braunberg, and Shannon and Bo Garrard. Nancy was a graduate of Iowa State University and worked as a registered dietician and homemaker in Atlanta, Ga., until her retirement to St. Augustine in the late 1980s. Upon arriving in St. Augustine, Nancy became enthralled with the history and culture of St. Augustine and became an integral part of sharing that history with many residents and visitors alike. She spent much time working and volunteering in the Spanish Quarter Museum, demonstrating her beloved craft of weaving, spinning and dyeing wool. She was instrumental in the founding of the St. Augustine Textile Guild in hopes that others could see the importance of this history of the craft and its importance in our future. She also was an active participant in the Women of Vision at the Cummer Museum in Jacksonville, Fla. Nancy was a believer that life was to be lived and will be greatly missed by all that knew her. A Memorial Mass will be held at the Cathedral-Basilica in St. Augustine at 10 a.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Nancy's honor to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida or another charity of your choice. Craig Funeral Home Crematory Memorial Park is in charge of arrangaments.

I send my heartfelt sympathy to Hannah and family. Nancy and I shared a love for weaving, dyeing and the St. Augustine Textile Guild. We spent many happy times exchanging ideas in the fiber arts. I will always remember her sense of style, generosity and that wonderful laugh.

I was saddened to hear of Nancy's passing. It caused me to reflect on the enjoyable times with her and Wilf in Marietta, Fairmount and St Augustine. Her wit and personality will never be duplicated.

Love,
