Robert (Bob) Compton, 77, died peacefully on Sept. 13, 2006, at BayView in St. Augustine with his family at his side after a battle with lung cancer.
Bob was born in Staunton, Ill., on May 30, 1929. He attended Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill., where he received a B.S. degree. He attended graduate schools at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.; The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. Mr. Compton retired as an executive from AT&T after 33 years of service in Kansas City, Mo., White Plains, N.Y., and Bedminster, N.J. Bob moved to St. Augustine in 1989 from Pearl River, N.Y., and opened the Old City House Inn and Restaurant with his wife, Alice, their son, John, and his wife, Darcy.
He was a military policeman during World War II and the Korean War. He served on the Pearl River, N.Y. School Board for nine years, one as its president. He also served on the Board of Cooperative Educational Services in Rockland County, N.Y., for four years. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church wherever he lived, serving on the boards of trustees, Deacons and Session. He was an officer and past president of Habitat for Humanity in St. Johns County, receiving the Catholic Charities Good Samaritan Award in 2004 for his work with the organization.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, of 56 years; daughters Gail Compton, of Burlington, Vt., Susan and her husband; Craig Meyerer, and Marilyn Compton, all of St. Augustine; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son; John; in 2002.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Memorial Presbyterian Church at 2:30 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to Habitat for Humanity of St. Johns County.
