James Yach Obituary

Yach, James Edwin "Boss'

July 19, 1947-

June 6, 2014

James Edwin "Boss" Yach was born in Stevens Point, Wis., the youngest son of Edwin and Ramona Yach. He spent his childhood with his siblings, older brother Thomas, and younger sisters, Ruth and Jane. His sister, Kathleen died in infancy. He attended Pacelli Catholic High School, where and was a state championship wrestler, football player, stellar and accomplished student-athlete. After, he attended the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, where he majored in Spanish and received a minor in education. It was here that he met his beloved wife of 45 years, Suzanne, at age 19. He taught at Assumption Catholic High School, coaching wrestling and football. He helped coach the players to the State Football Championship at Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wis., November 10, 1973, where Assumption beat Milwaukee Marquette 12-10, and welcomed his first daughter, Heather Sunshine, the same year. Upon relocating to South Florida in the mid 70's, he began a teaching career at Cooper City High School and was the wrestling coach. He welcomed his second daughter, Katie Holly, in 1976. He took a brief break from teaching and went into the international real estate business and was instrumental in building several prominent local restaurants. He obtained his Masters degree in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University and returned to teaching and mentoring. He taught at Norcrest Elementary, McNab Elementary and Pompano Beach Middle before arriving at his prized Fort Lauderdale High School and Fort Lauderdale Community School, where he spent the last 25 years. He taught Spanish and served as the peer counseling coordinator, taught GED and ESOL and passed several summers teaching maximum security inmates at the Broward County Jail. During Homecoming Week he was celebrated with "Boss Yach" day, where his students would dress up like him. He was fundamental in establishing the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and sponsored the First Priority Christian Student Organization and coached boys and girls golf. In 1996, he was Broward County's Adult Education Teach of the Year and served as a mentor to countless adult and high school students. Not only was he an icon at Fort Lauderdale High School but an icon of Christian service to his community. He was a lover of humanity.

James is survived by his wife, Suzanne; daughters, Heather Yach Krakowski and Catherine Yach Gleason; three precious granddaughters, Alexandra, Channing and Holly; brother, Tom; sisters, Ruth and Jane; sons-in-law, James Krakowski and Ryan Gleason;, countless nieces and nephews, dozens of true friends, hundreds of colleagues and coaches and thousands of magnificent students who affectionately referred to him as "Boss".

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 4595 Baywiew Drive, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308 at noon on Saturday, June 14, 2014. His final resting place will be alongside his father, mother and sister at the Guardian Angel Cemetery, Stevens Point, Wis., Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with graveside services conducted by St. Stephen's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Boss Yach GED scholarship fund, details to follow.

One of the nicest, kindest men that I have ever met. His passing was a shock to all those who knew, loved, and respected him. His passing is a tragic loss to his family, friends and South Florida.

My sympathy to Jim's family. He was like a force of nature and did so much to help the students he worked with. I will always remember him a true gentleman, the likes of which seem few these days. I am sure Sue will continue their legacy of passion and devotion to adul education.

Coach Yach was just the coolest teacher at AHS the 3 years I had him for Spanish. One lunch hour he spotted me at McDonald's which meant that I skipped out of school. The next hour in 3rd year Spanish he asked me in front of the class how I would say Big Mac in Spanish!! Point made. Just a really awesome teacher that connected with us kids in a good way that left lasting impressions. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.

I try my best not to cry but like Mr. Yact always tell me times of joy, sad, anger, and every Season its ok to cry. "Zioniah you are wonderful person inside and out even when you had your hard times or lose patients....hug yourself & keep believe Jesus & you. Jesus ALWAYS there with you"....I never forget went come to First Priority on Wednesdays, prayer circles, between classes, pep rallies, and so much more...To me he more then mentor, teaher.....He a prime example of postive, great fruits, soldier to cry on, but mostly he is unique. Thank you for making Fort Lauderdale HS days the best mentor to every age plus my 3 family members (AJ, TJ, & Bunny) love you so much. RIP Mr. Yact #FlyingLs #Forever #FLHSPRIDE #Passionate #HelpPeople #Jesus

I met Jim & Suzanne while they were playground leaders at St Stephens school when I was 13 years old. I remained friends with them after their wedding. I visited them once when I was 19 years old on a trip to Florida and slept on their living room floor with 3 of my friends. All of us burnt to a crisp from laying out in the Florida sun. Not too smart for Wisconsin girls. Jim & Suzanne were very kind people. I enjoyed both of them so much. They felt like family to me. I'm sorry for your loss. He was a wonderful man. Joan Belmont

I just want to say ... The earth lost an incredible human being this past week. Mr. Yach, you have always been there for me from the moment I walked in your class in 9th grade right up until to the moment I graduated and walked that stage. I could talk to you about anything, you were always there to help me with my problems, and there isn't one person who did not adore you. Sure, I didn't learn much of Spanish in your class (lol) but I always chose you as my teacher because your stories & life lessons were intriguing. Also, when I was a senior I didn't even want to be a peer counselor, but I joined the class just to be around you and grew to love peer counseling. You were always there, both as a teacher and as a friend. My memory is a bit fuzzy but I believe your rule was, "1. Jefe Yach is always right. And 2. If you think differently, please refer back to rule #1" Haha. You were truly a beautiful soul and will always be missed. I'm just happy that when I (and the rest of your students) think of you, I can smile instead of cry. I love you Boss Yach!

I feel so fortunate to have known Jim and to have seen him only a few months ago. Always jovial and welcoming.
You leave your loved ones behind with sadness and regret but rest assured, you will be ready for your next journey! I salute you in all your accomplishments and bid you farewell with my deepest condolences to Suzie, Heather, and Catherine.

June 12, 2014

My prayers are with you and your family on the passing of your beloved Jim. We taught together at Assumption and would occasionally converse with each other down the corridor. I was at one end of the corridor and Jim was at the other. He made me laugh.

I knew coach Yach as a high school football player. At that time my impression was this guy's on fire, full of energy, always pushing us beyond our limited views of who we where and what we were capable of doing. I remember coach visiting the school's art display where I had one of my very primitive paintings on display. He look it over and asked if this was one of mine, but before I could respond he said whoever did it was original and I like that. Meant a lot to me at the time and still does.
Death is so difficult but love is so beautiful. Hold these two in your heart and you may find that the opportunity to be touched by his beauty eventually overcomes the death of the man.

Tom and I are saddened by the passing of Jim. We both knew Jim in high school where all the good times began. We have great memories from the high school reunions.
Our prayers to Suzie and all her family members. God Bless you all.

The quality of a persons life is not in how much he has or has given, it is more what he has effected in his time on earth. We who have known him know that James has given of himself the parts that effects us all the most. His love for his fellow man. His family has learned to draw that from him. In his life they have had his love and have drawn from that his character . In his passing they will have his strength.
