Arthur Francis (Artie) Carr
September 29, 1934 - June 26, 2024
ST. HELENA - On June 26, 2024, longtime St. Helena resident and community champion, Arthur Francis (Artie) Carr passed away at the age of 89. His love for his family and his 70-plus years of volunteer in the community will be forever missed.
Artie was born on September 29, 1934, in San Jose, CA. His family moved to St. Helena in the early 1950s and Artie instantly felt a sense of comfort, knowing he had found a place to call home. He attended St. Helena High School where he was on the track and football team. After graduation in 1953, he enlisted in the military and served four years in the U.S. Army and remained in the Army Reserve until 1962.
Artie's love for St. Helena brought him home where he met and fell in love with Mary Margaret (Peggy) Cardoza of Calistoga. They were married in 1961 and soon after welcomed daughter Kelly and sons, Patrick, and Frank. In 1972, he established Art Carr Roofing Company which he successfully ran until the early 1990s.
Artie followed his passion for sports and service by volunteering for several organizations in St. Helena. He became a volunteer fireman during the 1960s and continued until mid 1970s. He also volunteered with the St. Helena Carpy Gang Youth Football program, serving as coach from 1971-2015, then as President from 2008-2012. Artie also helped develop the St. Helena Fire Department History Museum, and more recently the St. Helena High School Hall of Fame Committee. For his many years of service, Artie was recognized by the St. Helena Fire Department and was inducted as a Distinguished Honouree in the St. Helena High School Hall of Fame in 2021.
Artie is predeceased by his father Arthur, mother Henrietta, wife Peggy, and son, Patrick. Artie is survived by his brother, Dennis (Karen), daughter Kelly, son Frank (Laurie), along with many cousins, nieces and nephews from both the Carr and Cardoza families.
There will be a private gravesite service, followed by a public Celebration of Life and reception at the St. Helena Fire Department, Station 17, 1500 Main Street, St. Helena, CA, on Friday, July 19, 2024, starting at 3:00 p.m., with remarks at 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the organizations Artie loved so dearly: St. Helena Carpy Gang Alumni Association, St. Helena Little League, Saints Athletic Association, St. Helena Fire Department, Station 17 - History Museum; St. Helena Athletic Hall of Fame; St. Helena Historical Society.

The many years passed far too quickly! Attic and Peggy shared many a dinner over the years as I worked with school districts in Napa Cpunty and surrounding areas. After Peggy passed his calls several times a month meant as much to me as they did to home. He was a very caring soul; his perspective on everything brought many chuckles and food for thought! I will miss him greatly!

We will miss Mr Carr! First meet Art at little league over 50 years ago! Then he would come in Steves Hardware to harass my brother and I. Looking for a donation for one of his charities! One day he came in and threw a Carpy gang shirt at! " here I owe you one"! I told him I deserved 2! He gave me another one! RIP Art. Gary Menegon and family!

I hope everyone knew Artie was quite the artist. My husband (Cracker) was gifted with a drawing of himself. Artie was very observant; it´s all in the drawing. The treasured picture is on our wall. I first met Peg with Artie at a car show. What a couple! A couple I admired.
After Peg passed, Artie´s heart was too broken. His blessed day arrived and now we will never see Artie cruising the streets of St Helena in his yellow 56 Ford Truck!

After Artie met Peggy, Artie always included me on their outings such as visiting Yosemite. I immediately loved Artie when I met him and knew Peggy had made a good choice. They had a wonderful marriage that we always looked up to.
When Tom and I were married Peggy was my maid of honor. As we were at the alter and it was time to put the rings on, we realized that Peggy did not have the rings. We used Peggy´s ring for the ceremony. Either she or Artie had forgotten them so Artie had to rush back to St. Helena from Calistoga after the wedding to get them. We had a big laugh over it.

My heart is with you now as you recount sweet memories and heal. Life feels so different when we become `orphans´ - left to carry the legacy. I´ve seen the compassion and strength from Kelly (and Frank) and am sure all will be well. Hugs, Jodi
