My husband and I met in our 20s but we shared one fond memory of childhood. We both were patients of Dr. Summers through the 1970s. He was a wonderful doc, was so funny and I looked forward to every visit as a kid., He is still being spoken about which is what moved me to leave these words. You were loved!!!!

Dr. Summers took out my tonsils when I was in kindergarten. In the operating room, he had me blow into a balloon, and said he'd give me one of his model airplanes if I could pop it. I remember blowing into it one time, and then I was knocked out by the anesthesia. I swear I heard it pop while I was asleep. (maybe he popped it ?) He was sweet.
God Bless you, Dr. Summers.

Dr. Summers was a great man. I started seeing him at his Hampton Village office when I was 7 and never connected the dots as to why there so many model airplanes on the seeing of the office waiting room, which I loved. Now I get it! He was always there when my Mom and Dad needed him for the four of us. One of kind....I still think of him often 50 years later and will never forget him.

To Doctor Summers Family,
I am so sorry for your loss, your father was an amazing man. I first met your father in his office some 25 years ago at his office on Watson. I was a new foster mother with some challaning boys, he was amazing with them and me. He was worried about them but most of all he would say to me, those boys will be fine, now lets talk about you, now we need to make sure you are okay. Everytime we had an appointment he would give me the biggest hug and would ask me how we doing. Yes, I can go on and on about
Dr. Summers, he is one of the reasons we stuck it out in foster care system for 28 years, he said it may not look like you are makig a difference but you are, keep up the good work, nothing but a good word from him everytime. When he retired I was very sad and just didn't know what to do. Then one day he introduced me to Dr. Horan who was taking over his practice, he told him that we were special people and he wanted to make sure we were going to be taken care of, needless to say Dr. Horan was a gem as well. I am truly sorry for your loss, he has touched so many people. I missed you when you retired and I will miss you even more. Rest in peace Dr. Summers.

My children loved Dr. Summers and so did I. He was such a kind, loving and gentle man and a wonderful doctor.
A tickle and a hug then later when he got older, a handshake for my son, But always he wanted a kiss on the cheek from my daughter.
Dr. Summers made this world a better place. He was a rare individual. I've found no other doctor who measured up to him. Rest in peace, sweet man. Thanks for easing this mom's mind when she needed your help.

Sorry to hear of your dad's passing. I remember seeing him at his Hampton Vlg office like it was yesterday. He was my pediatrician & I'm 50. I'll never forget his kind demeanor in such a scary environment and of course the tub of snazzy rings, etc. he let you pick from at end of visit.

My first job as a Medical Assistant in 1985 was in the office of Dr. Summers. He was such a kind and gentle man and his patients and staff loved him. He definately helped to start my career off on a good note. I ended up moving to Crestwood years later and now drive past our old office every day. I have thought of him often over the years. I found out while working with him that he had even delivered two of my cousins. He was a very special doctor and person and will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Dr. John Summers was among the best doctors I have known. My dad was M.D.; he and John were friends at Incarnate Word Hospital. Both had the exact same date of birth! When I was sick in 1950's my dad took me to his office at Hampton Village. I was fascinated by all those model airplanes hanging from the ceiling. After each visit I begged my dad to buy me a model airplane kit - he did!

I never forget his caring attitude; he picked me up and hugged me at the end of every visit until I got too big for him!

In the 1970's, never forgetting him, I had him as my 2 sons' peditrician - he had looked after them through their preemie stages. (He delivered my second son.) I was amazed at his know-how techniques since he made my 2 boys at ease as he administered shots! He always tickled my two sons at the end of every visit. (at that time, his office was in Sunset Hills.)

After I moved in my home in 2002, I was surprised to discover him living in a house - only a few doors away!

To sum up, he was a GREAT man!

My first born was 9 months old in 1986 when Dr. Summers called meningitis. The doctors at the hospital said it was crazy and did not want to perform the spinal tap. They did and told us to kiss our doctor because he saved our baby's life. That baby just graduated from law school, is getting married and taking a job as a public defender for the state of Colorado. She is a world saver who is here because of the crazy intuition of a marvelous doctor. I had two more babies, but never found a doctor who could replace him after he retired. Dr. Summers will always be in my husband and my hearts.

What would I have done without Dr. Summers. A new mom that was simply terrified of making a mistake with my new little bundle. And he was always there for me, calming me down, and telling me in that wonderful way of his that we would all live through this. I could count on him, day or night. He was always patient with me, kind and gentle. My kids loved him and still talk about him to this day. What a wonderful man he was. Knowing him was a gift.

As a patient of his in the mid-70's thru the 80's, I loved his waiting room. My model plane building started because of him. I eventually lined my bedroom ceiling with planes.

I was a patient of Dr. Summers from 1966-1980. I still remember the Hampton location with all the airplanes hanging from the ceiling. I loved going to him and was never afraid to be there. Dr Summers was our pediatrician (starting in 1972 in Hampton Village). My husband & I had six children(two sets of twins). He was always so kind and helpful, and made me feel like everything would be okay when my kids had a serious problem. He was a wonderful doctor, and my children loved his waiting room with all the planes hanging from the ceiling. He always gave me double time when I brought in 2 babies. A donation in his memory will be made to Cardinal Glennon Hospital by our family.

What can I say that hasn't been said. Dr. Summers was a decorated war vet and an outstanding pediatrician. He was our kids doctor years ago. When I struggled to pay doctor bills he helped me on several occasions make it easier on my budget for which I will never forget. What a shame doctors of today are not half as caring as Dr. Summers was.

My deepest sympathies to the Summers family. He was my children's pediatrician from birth until he retired. I don't know who missed him more, my kids or me. He always made me feel confident as a mom and made the kids feel loved. His head is just a little shinier than most from the baby drool of all the giggling babies he held and played with. God will have good company!

I will never forget Dr. Summers, in fact, my sister Carole and I were just sharing memories of him a few weeks ago. She and I both had children (two boys each) in the same time frame, and we were lucky to have Dr. Summers for their doctor. He always called the boys "chief" and they loved him (as we all did). In fact, my oldest son, Kelley, still went to him for physical exams when he was in his late teens. He once asked how long he would keep seeing him and Dr. Summers said: "As long as you keep wanting to come back".

What a wonderful man, who left a warm, lasting impression in my family's heart. God Bless Him! From Kelley and Grant Daniels' Mom

June 14, 2013

My favorite memory of Dr. Summers was how he would hug me at the end of every visit. I asked him why he did that and he would always reply "Because you're such a good mom". As a young mom I loved hearing that and I loved him for it. He'll be in my prayers always.

What a wonderful man. He was my doctor when I was a child. I have only fond memories of going to my appointments. Even when I was scared he made me laugh. Rest in peace Dr John.
