Mildred Sayers Obituary

Mildred Wade "Miki" Sayers, age 94, of Sturgis, passed away early Thursday morning, Aug. 11, 2016, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.
She was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Fort Jackson, S.C., a daughter of the late Orville and Irene (Wade) Guthrie.
Miki resided in Sturgis since 1952. Her early life was lived at Fort Benning, Ga., where at age 16 she graduated in 1937 from high school as the valedictorian of her class. While living at Fort Benning, she was an administrative assistant for Gen. Omar Bradley during World War II.
On March 23, 1944, she married Raymond G. Sayers in Columbus, Ga. He died March 9, 1974.
In 1953, Mrs. Sayers accepted a position with National Carbon Coated Paper Company in Sturgis. The company was later renamed Sturgis Newport Business Forms. She retired in 1985.
She was a longtime active member of First United Methodist Church in Sturgis, where she sang in the choir for over 40 years.
Mrs. Sayers was an avid walker and enjoyed old movies, old hymns, was an amazing baker and those who knew her will never forget her true love for dark chocolate.
She is survived by two sons, Michael R. (Cheryl) Sayers of Boca Raton, Fla., and David (Amy) Sayers of Sturgis; three grandchildren, Dr. Stefani (Jeremy) Martin of Boca Raton, McLaine (Andrew) Mast of Ypsilanti and Shelby Jones of Kalamazoo; two great-grandchildren: J.R. Martin and Mackenna Martin; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Elizabeth Taylor and Kitty Gladfelter.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private memorial graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at a later date at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
The Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.

Mike, David, Cheryl, Amy and Family: So sorry to hear of the loss of Miki. Time seems to take so much away but seems to go so fast. While reading about your mom, memories came flowing back about your mom and house on Hatch St. Hopefully those memories comfort you in this time of loss.

Praying for the family

Miki was a coworker at National Carbon Coated Paper Co with our father, Fred Mandigo and me while I worked one summer in 1966. She was very thoughtful and sweet. Our father enjoyed working with her.
Her son, Mike, graduated with me from Sturgis High School. She will be missed by many who knew her.

So very sorry to read this sad news. Thinking of your family at this time. Cherish all those wonderful memories.

David and Mike (and all the rest of my family): I hope you know how deeply saddened we are at the loss of that wonderful Aunt Miki. What memories I have - especially her "driving skills", that Guthrie obsession with chocolate, the black-bottom pie she made, and maybe the most: singing with Mom. She had a long and good life, but will be greatly missed. Hugs and much love to all of you. Leslie and Roger
