Fedele Scutti Obituary

Fedele V. (Dale) Scutti passed away sadly and unexpectedly, February 25, 2014, at age 80. He is predeceased by his parents and his son, Jay V. Scutti. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Kimberlie; his son, John D. (Lorraine), grandchildren Jay, Jarred, Janea, Megan and Katelyn Scutti; his brother John J. (Mary L.), nieces and nephews and many dear friends. A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Scutti moved to Rochester, New York after serving in the Coast Guard. He worked for Gannett Newspapers on the yacht "The Widgeon" as a diesel mechanic. He then owned and operated a used car business in Webster, New York, later branching out to build automobile dealerships for Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Realty. Along the way, he also became one of the largest new car dealers in the world, owning and operating more than ten automobile franchises operating out of 36 dealerships. In addition to his love of automobiles, Mr. Scutti became extremely successful in commercial real estate development, not only in Rochester, New York, but also in California and Florida, developing over 7 million square feet. In recent years, Mr. Scutti also owned casinos in Colorado, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, New Jersey and Florida. He was also licensed in several other jurisdictions. He loved boating and enjoyed many yachts over the years. For a short period of time he was involved in the ownership and operation of one of the oldest boat manufacturing companies in the United States. Mr. Scutti may best be well known for his 1988 partnership with Merv Griffin in besting Donald Trump on his bid to overtake control of Resorts International and Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas. Mr. Scutti was also well known for his philanthropic and community activities both in Rochester and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He was a major benefactor to the Mayo Clinic. He was known for his holiday gift-giving, even from the days of his car dealerships when every employee took home the fixings for a turkey dinner. For many years he donated bicycles for underprivileged children through the Broward County Sheriff's Office. A true lover of nature, he established two deep wreck diving sites off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale, the Jay Scutti Reef and the Robert Edmister Reef. Rememberances in Mr. Scutti's name may be directed to The Aquinas Institute of Rochester, 1127 Dewey Avenue, Rochester, New York 14613, for the benefit of the Jay V. Scutti Scholarship Fund.

Dear Kimberly,

I was just thinking about my old friend and client, Dale Scutti, and I decided to Google him to see what other great adventures he was up to. I was so sad to see that he died. I will never forget the fantastic times I spent with Dale as a broker at Drexel Burnham and Lehman Bros. I will always remember how whenever I called, it was either you or Kathy on the phone first! I hope you are well, and all the best to you in the future. Regards, Bruce Glasser

Dear Kim:

I will always have fond memories of the time I spent with you and Dale. He inspired me in several ways, to be kind with people, to be giving and to enjoy life. He once showed me a photo of himself taken in the days after he got out of the Navy. He was always warm and kind to me. I'll miss his great sense of humor and love of life. If there is anything I can do for you, it will be my pleasure to help.

Sincerely,

Mr Scutti,
Thank you for all the great laughs and late nights at favorite haunts like Bistro Mezzaluna, Casa de Angelo, Runway 84, Scotch and Sirloin, Red Fedeles and of course Lester's! I will never forget late night driving with Kimberlie, Jay and Jarred in the caddy looking and browsing properties for sale. Thanks for treating me to a lot of feasts! I won't forget how you launched the tennis balls from the tennis ball machine for Lucky to play with off the back porch. Or the time Jarred and I were you and Kimberlie's drivers of the Maybach and you made Jarred wear the caboose hat! And all memories we had watching TV and eating take out from Pier 66 on the Scutti Shark on the back deck. I am glad I got to spend time with you and got to know you through Jarred. You are someone I will never forget! Your memories will live on.

We are all very sorry to hear about the untimely passing of Mr. Scutti. There is not much that catches my Dad off-guard, and the news of this loss most certainly did.

About 24 years ago, I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Scutti when he and Kimberlie came over for dinner. They visited our new home and welcomed us back to Rochester, after we had lived away for eight years. He was a gracious guest and a compassionate friend to my father. I was impressed by that and never forgot the encouragement that he bestowed upon us.

In the subsequent years, I would see Mr. Scutti at trade shows, at his offices while working on deals or during the random stop to simply to say, “Hello” and see pictures of his impressive watercraft. He would offer me interesting advice and it was always appreciated. His generous Christmas gifts were an annual reminder of his kindness.

To his family, I'm sure that he was a tremendous part of their lives. He put them first, and anything that he did was planned with their well-being in mind. Kimberlie and Jay, as you are the two family members that I do know, and to the rest of you good folks that I do not, please accept our heartfelt condolences.

To my father, he was an esteemed friend and someone that he looked forward to speaking with every few months. Last week, he mentioned, “Having to call Dale.” He will, most certainly, miss those conversations.

To me, Mr. Scutti was an intelligent and kind gentleman. During the past couple of years, I have been attending several conferences in Florida. I was truly comforted to know that if I ever needed help, I knew just who to call.

To the rest of the world, I'm sure that he was perceived as a shrewd and wildly successful business man, as well as a generous philanthropist that positively affected the lives of many, many grateful individuals.

In short, Mr. Dale Scutti was a manifestation of the American dream!

With much admiration,

Sarah Costich

To the Scutti Family and Friends,

I never met Dale personally but heard about how great of a man he was from my father throughout the years. He always spoke so highly of Dale almost like he was father figure to him. I was hoping to one day personally meet Dale but from the personal stories told to me I feel like I've had that privilege. I think of Dale and a smile comes to my face because he embodies a great person. A true man and legacy.
Missed dearly.

Love,
Gary JR

It was an honor to have had the privilege to work with Dale. Thank you Dale for all you have done. You have had a huge impact on my life without probably even knowing it. I am relieved that not to long ago I had the chance to tell you "Thank you" for being tough but always fair. You are a huge part of my success. I was always listening! You will be greatly missed but never forgotten!! Rest in Peace!

I worked for Dale years ago , he was an amazing man . My condolences to the family on their great loss . Very few people in life enjoyed the success he did but I know it was all hard work that got him where he was in life .I remember how hurt he was when he lost Jay ; the plaque he had made up in Jay's memory is still on the Scutti Dealership Building on West Henrietta Road. God Bless him always .
