Gretchen Clark Obituary

Clark Clark, Gretchen O?Grody Gretchen, beloved wife, mother, sister and daughter, died on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at the age of 39. Gretchen grew up in Atlanta and Orlando, then attended Georgia Southern University where she graduated with a B.A. and a M.A. in special educational counseling. She had previously worked with autistic children at ARC, and was currently employed as a guidance counselor at Riverglades Elementary. Gretchen?s infectious smile and life-loving spirit attracted many friends. She was passionate about snow skiing from an early age. She loved adventures, whether while traveling in the country or abroad, outdoors while hiking or kayaking, or in the pages of a good book. What she loved most in life, though, was being a mother to beautiful Faith. Gretchen will always be remembered for her love of God, her laughter, her compassion, and her devotedness to family and friends. Gretchen is survived by her husband, Ken; her daughter, Faith; her stepchildren Grant and Paige; her parents Michael & Kitty O?Grody and Alexandra & Bill Moore; and her sisters, Jeannine O?Grody Chatham and husband, John; Haley and Abby Rizor; and Beverly and Bill Hart. A memorial service is planned for Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 4:30 pm at The Church by the Glades, 400 Lakeview Drive, Coral Springs, FL. A reception will take place at the church following the service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the ?Faith-Lian Clark Scholarship Fund? account number 1010258440906, Wachovia Bank 1460 Coral Ridge Drive, Coral Springs, Florida 33071. All donations can be mailed to the above listed account or deposited at any Wachovia Bank.

The Bridge Builder

An old man, going a lone highway,
Came, at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.

The old man crossed in the twilight dim;
The sullen stream had no fear for him;
But he turned, when safe on the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.

"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim, near,
"You are wasting strength with building here;
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again will pass this way;
You've crossed the chasm, deep and wide-
Why build you this bridge at the evening tide?"

The builder lifted his old gray head:
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said,
"There followeth after me today,
A youth, whose feet must pass this way.

This chasm, that has been naught to me,
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building this bridge for him."

My life is different because of Gretchen and will never be the same without her. She made such a difference in so many lives. She will be forever missed and loved more than words can express.

To Ken, Faith, and Family:
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. There are so many people thinking of you all, and praying you will soon find comfort in the wonderful memories of Gretchen you have been given over the years. Her infectious smile affected everyone she came in contact with, and will never be forgotten.

To Gretchen:
May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

Dear Ken and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Gretchen was a great friend of mine at Georgia Southern. We had recently reconnected on facebook and I can't tell you how excited I was for that. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the whole family. I am so truly sorry. With deepest sympathy,

Gretchen was one of the most caring, warm-hearted people I have ever known. There aren't many guidance counselors, who know the students so well, that they could just look at any given student, on any given day, and tell that something was not quite right with them. But, Gretchen could. She helped my children, and myself, through some pretty rough times. You could always count on her to be there for you, ready and eager to help, in whatever way she could. She was an incredible friend, mentor, mediator, listener, mother, wife and so much more. When it came to her family, all you had to do is mention Ken or Faith, and you could see her eyes light up, and a big silly grin from ear to ear. Gretchen will live forever in the hearts and souls of everyone who knew her, and we will all be better people because of it. Thank you to her family, for sharing such a special person with all of us.
All Our Love,

Ken,

My deepest condolences to you, Faith and the entire Family.

Although I didn't know Gretchen for very long, the times that we spent in the park during Adoption Play Dates were so much fun. Gretchen was so in love with Faith. She meant the world to her.

Why these things happen, we'll never know.

You and Faith are in my thoughts and prayers. Hoping that Love and Memories will over shadow the pain soon.

The world is a little dimmer with the loss of Gretchen. She was such a caring and loving person. There was a picture of her at the service of her laughing at her sister's wedding. That is how I will always remember Gretchen - laughing, her eyes twinkling.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of Gretchen's family during this difficult time.

I had the privilege of calling Gretchen a close friend since 4th grade. We shared many many great times together over the years. I will never forget her amazing smile, great laugh, and love of life. Her optimism was contagious and something I looked up to. While her life was short, the impact she had on others was anything but that.

To Ken, Faith, and the rest of Gretchen's family, may your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

Gretchen, I will never ever forget you! Rest in peace!

Gretchen was a wonderful shining and smiling light at Riverglades. She helped my son Ben get through some very difficult times. She provided him with great advice and me as well. We are both deeply saddened by her passing but at the same time, I feel lucky and privileged that she touched our lives.

It seems impossible and impossibly unfair that Gretchen is gone. She should be here to enjoy the career and the family she worked to build, to enjoy it all at its peak. We are so sorry for your loss and are thinking about you.

Mrs.Clark was so thoughtful and kind to myself and my daughter while undergoing cancer diagnosis and treatment. She took time to send emails, cards and to call to ensure that Cara was doing well and when she wasn't sat and spoke with both of us when Cara was scared. May God bless you and your family during a devastating and painful time. Gretchen was a special woman who has touched our lives, we will miss her.

Is is so rare that such a thoughtful, warm, friendly, caring, person who exudes an honest love of life crosses our path. I admired Gretchen for the wonderful way she communicated with parents, children, and colleagues. She spoke enthusiastically about her family and friends, and loved sharing the beautiful times you had together. She spoke so highly of all who worked with her to help children grow. Gretchen always had a smile on her face and touched all of our lives with graciousness. We were lucky to have her in our lives. We are all so sad that her time with us was so brief. Our sincere condolences to all members of Gretchen's family. She loved you dearly. Faith, you were the joy of mommy's life!

As a parent of a child with autism, I know Gretchen from her days at ARC. Everything she did was to care about 'her' kids and looked after them as a loving mother. It was with great happiness to see Gretchen so happy when she became a mom when Faith came into her life. The family has suffered a great loss but so has every child she has helped during her career.
