Norman L. Scott

Norman L. Scott, age 81, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Glenview, Illinois died Monday evening, April 22nd, near his home in Ft. Lauderdale. He was founder and director of The Consulting Engineers Group, Inc. (CEG), a design firm he established in 1966 and whose sole objective is to service the precast/prestressed concrete industry. He was born in Meadow Grove, Nebraska on October 17, 1931. He graduated with a BS degree in civil engineering from the University of Nebraska in 1954. Shortly after graduating, he was called up into service by the U.S. Air Force. From 1954 to 1956, he was stationed in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he worked as a personnel officer, supply officer and installation engineer at Palm Beach Air Force Base. During this time he met and married his wife, Joan Culbertson. In 1958, he joined the construction company R.H. Wright & Son, Inc. as a sales engineer in Ft Lauderdale. In 1959, he was appointed second executive secretary of the Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) and moved its headquarters from Boca Raton to Chicago. Over the next 55 years, he played a major role in shaping the precast / prestressed concrete industry. CEG became an international powerhouse in the industry with major offices in Chicago and San Antonio and satellite offices in Ft. Lauderdale, Bella Vista (AR), Horseshoe Bay (TX), Apple Valley (MN), and Cincinnati (OH). CEG projects have included more than thirty major stadiums such as the Olympic Stadium in Atlanta and the first all-precast major league baseball stadium (Florida Suncoast Dome); the Connecticut Tennis Center in New Haven; parking structures such as the Penn Street Parking Structure for the University of Maryland in Baltimore, the Mall of America in Minneapolis, and Newark Airport; and the first all-precast prison for the State of Virginia. Mr. Scott was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Ft. Lauderdale and an avid golfer and tennis player until his death. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan Culbertson Scott. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to honor Mr. Scott make a donation to First Presbyterian Church Prison Ministry or a charity of their choice. A memorial service will be held in Ft. Lauderdale at First Presbyterian Church on Monday, April 29, at 11:00 a.m. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date in Chicago.
