Larry McVey Obituary

Larry McVey

January 29, 1957 - December 14, 2022

RURAL RETREAT, Va.

Larry Edward McVey, age 65, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on December 14, 2022, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va.

Larry was born in Chilhowie, Va., to Glenna Marion and the late Gordon McVey. He was a lifelong resident of Smyth County, Va., where he was employed for 37+ years with W-L Construction and Paving Inc.

Larry lived his life to the fullest. He loved traveling to different places and taking cruises with his wife who he nicknamed "Lulu." He was adventurous and enjoyed amusement parks, bungee jumping, ziplining and skydiving. He was passionate and very proud of their farm and his green thumb. As he would say "I can grow hair on a watermelon." He was a prankster and jokester and loved by everyone who knew him. He loved spending time with his granddaughters and great-granddaughter who he nicknamed "Rosebud."

He is survived by Glenna Marion; Elizabeth (Liz) "Lulu" McVey; Jaclyn, Joshua, Lola, Hannah, Elijah Plumber, Isabella Carter; Summer, Symphanie, Shylan Laignel, Abbigail Crawford, Melody "Rosebud" Weimann; Chris, Stephanie, Hope Marion; Judy Frazier; Marjorie, Jerry Whitt, Jamie Turner, Clay Clatterbaugh; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A special thank you to Melissa Franklin, Jessica Blackwell, Willie Russell, Saltville Medical Center, and CCU staff at JMH for their care and compassion.

A viewing will be held at Bradley's Funeral Home in Marion, Va., on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, from 5 until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Bradley's funeral home Chapel in Marion, Va., with the Rev. I can’t believe I am here writing this post.

We lost you. After a two week battle your time came. I can’t wrap my head around it. You have been in our family for 20+ years. You put my grandmother on a pedestal, you two were a perfect match. We all knew how much love you had for each other and I can only pray my love will be as strong as y’all’s one day.

I am beyond blessed to have you as my papaw. I can’t put into words how much you mean to me. From taking us in to picking us up on weekends. I will cherish every memory. I will especially miss our banter back and forth and you picking on me about stealing all the sausage balls every holiday.

But you taught me how a woman should be treated. How even the toughest of men “manly men” can be sentimental and a big teddy bear on the inside. And how no matter where we come from or what we did you will love us no matter what.

I’ll make sure my future kids know all about you and how the rocking chair was picked out for them way before they were here. How you loved them and the idea of them. I’ll never forget me walking in the door about 2 years ago and you being so happy. You were so proud of that chair.

I hope you know I love you, and I am eternally grateful to you for treating and loving Josue as one of your own. He absolutely loved going to see you almost every weekend. I’ll miss me and him fighting over who your favorite was. Even though you would pick his side we all know it was me .

I promise we will be there for mammy. We will of course be there for granny too. But I hope you know we love you so much. And I am grateful you were surrounded by those who love you most in your final moments.

I love you papaw.

Larry always found a way to make me smile.
I’m glad I got the chance to do the same. I’d have him laughing and he’d just shake his head at me after hearing one of my tales.
Liz and Glenna, the whole family, I’m truly sorry for your loss.

Larry was my boss at wl for years you couldn't have asked for a better man to work for and with. His jokes and sayings is what I'll miss about him. I'm sure going to miss him.

I didn't think this year could get any worse, and then it did. The past 2 weeks have been absolutely awful ( 2 months if we are being honest). I never thought I would see my strong headed papaw this sick. So sick he couldn't even enjoy his rosebud saying hi to him.

I'm glad you're not hurting anymore, but I'm so selfish that I still want you here. When Melody was born I was privileged to see your love for her, you cried the whole phone call and the first time you met her. I'll make sure Melody knows where her toy tractor came from and how her first ride on a four wheeler was with you. She will know that nobody was allowed to touch that tractor because you didn't want anyone breaking it, but you'd let her ride it all day long just to hear her laugh and watch her smile. You loved your Rosebud and sneaking her extra toys without telling Mammy.

I am thankful I was able to say goodbye and be there for you. I'm will be forever grateful that I was able to hear you say you love me one last time and ask me how school was.

We will be there for Mammy and granny for you. Ill make sure granny doesn't give Rosebud all the cookies. I have so many more things I can say, so many memories I am thankful to have and share, but you would've said by now that I'm a chatty cathy and you already know I love you.

I can't wait to own my own farm one day and make you proud.
