George Langford Obituary

George Robertson Langford, Sr.

Tallahassee - George R. Langford, Sr. died on January 3, 2019.

A service will be held at St Peter's Anglican Cathedral on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.. Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life at the family home following the service.

George was born in Thomasville, Georgia on October 13, 1923. His father was Daniel Luke Langford and his mother was Virginia Robertson Langford. George was the youngest of four children. His siblings were Daniel Luke Langford, William Madison Langford (KIA in WW2) and Anniewill Langford; all of whom predeceased him.

George attended Thomasville HS, and joined Patton's 3rd Army in 1942 immediately after graduating. He was honorably discharged and matriculated at The University of Virginia in 1945. While at UVA, George joined the Chi Phi fraternity, and he was instrumental in forming the Nu Delta Chapter of Chi Phi at FSU. He remained a close and loyal friend to many of his fraternity brothers. He graduated from UVA in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts and Law degree, and in 1951 used his legal training to start Municipal Code Corporation. He married Marian Corbin Lawton on Valentine's Day in 1953 (who predeceased him in 2012), and together they built Municipal Code Corporation into a nationally recognized legal publishing firm. George never met a stranger; he loved traveling in the family motor home and all things FSU.

He served an unprecedented three terms as Chairman of Seminole Boosters, and is credited with founding the Golden Chiefs; he held one of the few permanent seats on the FSU Foundation Board of Trustees, and Chaired FSU's first Capital Campaign. His fundraising skills were legendary, which he used for the benefit of FSU, Maclay School, Tall Timbers, the Monticello Opera House, Springtime Tallahassee, TaxWatch, the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, St John's Episcopal Church and St Peter's Anglican Church.

He received many awards and accolades during his career, some of which were: from FSU a Doctor of Humane Letters, Golden Circle Award, Hall of Fame and having the Boosters Chairman's Award named for him; and induction into the Thomasville Sports Hall of Fame and recognition as Florida's Entrepreneur of the Year. George was a member of the "Greatest Generation" and was the impetus behind FSU's World War II Institute.

GPa, a name he was called by his grandchildren, has two sons, Albert Lawton Langford (Beth) and George Robertson Langford, Jr (Jennifer); and five grandchildren, Giles Robertson Langford (Jennifer), Callie Corbin Langford, Madison Langford Cook (Jason), Daniel Lewis Langford and James Luke Langford. He was generous, kind, polite, principled and a great businessman; the consummate "southern gentleman and scholar."

The family would appreciate donations being sent to St. Peter's Church or the Seminole Boosters. Special thanks are offered to his caregivers: Miriam Dady, Anne Marie Regis, Olga Jocelyn, and perhaps his best friend later in life, DW Williams.

George lived life fully, and will be missed by the community and the many people whose lives he touched.

My deepest condolences for your loss. George was a kind and gentle Southern Gentleman. I do wish that I were in the US today to attend his funeral. I am the "altar flower lady from St. Peter's" who visited him with bouquets. We marched from Normandy to Paris on a regular basis. He had a wealth of knowledge and life experiences. He shared many of those stories with me. He and your mom were very special people.

Lawton,

My thoughts, prayers, and condolences are heartfelt for you and your family at this time. Your father's life certainly represented a progressive legacy which shall live on in the years and generations to come. Having lived in Tallahassee for just twenty years, Tallahassee will always be home due in large part to your dad. I'm sure many share my sentiments. May God's grace give you all comfort by those who surround you. Sincerely,
