Helen Shaara Obituary
Helen Elizabeth Krumwiede Shaara, 88, of Tallahassee, passed away on June 4, after a lengthy illness. She is the daughter of Howard and Elizabeth Krumwiede, of Highland Park, NJ.
Born in New York City, Helen grew up in New Jersey, and graduated from Douglass College (now part of Rutgers University). She and her family moved to Florida in 1955, settling first in Inverness, then moving to Tallahassee.
Helen spent thirty-seven years as a social worker and supervisor for the Florida Department of Health and Human Services, retiring in 1993. She has since served as a volunteer for the Leon County Public Library, among other charitable works.
She is predeceased by her husband, Pulitzer Prize winning author Michael Shaara. Helen is survived by her sister, Jean K. Boek, of Washington, DC; Son Jeff Shaara, his wife Stephanie and granddaughter Emma, of Gettysburg, PA; daughter Lila E. Shaara and her husband Rob Rayshich, and grandsons Fred Rayshich and Max Rayshich, of Pittsburgh, PA.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, June 25, at Culley's Meadowood Memorial Park at 700 Timberlane Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Leon County Library. Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home is handling the services.

Lila, Prayers and best wishes go out to you, your family and the friends of your mother, Mrs. Shaara. While I never met your mother, I think I know a great deal by the way she raised her children. I know her lessons are being and will continue to be passed along in the future by those who remember her the best.
