Rebekah Robertson Obituary

Rebekah "Becky" Robertson

Rebekah "Becky" (Johnson) Robertson, 61, passed away on March 11, 2014 in Tallahassee, Florida, surrounded by her loving family.

Becky was born in Durham, NC to Donald H. and Virginia (Tresca) Johnson, and raised primarily in Sarasota, FL, where she played the cello in junior and high school in the Sarasota Orchestra. She graduated from Florida State University with a B.S. in nursing and in 1975 married Rob Robertson, a network technician for the phone company. Becky worked as an R.N. on the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Tallahassee Memorial for nearly 25 years before retiring in 2013.

Becky is survived by her loving husband Rob Robertson, and her four children: Lindsay Robertson of New York, NY, Kevin Robertson of Tallahassee, Matthew Robertson of Tallahassee, and Mary Tresca Robertson of Tallahassee. She is also survived by her sister, Donna Johnson of Myakka City, Fl and her brother Martin Johnson of St. Petersberg, FL.

Becky was always full of joy and had boundless energy for helping others. She cherished her job caring for the area's sickest children, and loved teaching and mentoring many young nurses over the years as an instructor at FSU and TCC. It broke her heart to have to retire, because of her cancer, from the job she truly loved.

Becky was a woman of strong faith who found great peace and camaraderie in her church community at Good Shepherd. Becky also loved reading, knitting, crocheting, music, bird watching, and all things science and nature. A perfect weekend for Becky was a trip to the lighthouse at St. Marks with her family, a classical concert at Ruby Diamond with Rob and a hayride at Birdsong Nature Center with family and friends.

Becky's husband and children remember her as a down-to-earth, witty, funny, always happy mom whose compassion for others was unlimited. Her children were always impressed with Becky and Rob's strong values, which put family, friends, and faith first always. Her four children have embraced these values and will carry them on to future generations.

Becky will also be missed by her friends, who were instrumental in making the final year of her life as joyful as possible, visiting her daily and making trips to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. These friends contributed tremendously to Becky's quality of life and she loved them with all her heart.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 15 at 1 pm at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 4665 Thomasville Rd, Tallahassee, FL 32309 (850) 893-1837. Memorial donations can be made to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at TMH through the TMH foundation at http://www.tmh.org/WaysToGive (Please specify PICU.)

Becky, God gave us the blessing of meeting you. You will always be an angel in our lives and we will always remember our happy times with you and the Robertsons. We are thankful to share with you our happiest memories, like our "Nicholas Grandparents Party", during September of 2013. We are also thankful for sharing with us your wisdom and teaching us how to live a life full of love.

Rob and Robertson's children, God placed us on the same path for some reason, a path of love where we should keep Becky´s virtues in our hearts, especially in Nicholas, for him to share with generations to come.

I watched Lindsay one Summer for two weeks while Becky covered for a nurse friend on vacation. I only had to call if I sensed any distress, and Becky dropped everything and was at my house. She touched many as an AWESOME nurse, but she was FIRST an awesome Mom. She loved life!

I first met Becky at the Pilot Scholarship House on the FSU campus in 1971. She was generous with her time and was giving me a tour through the house, because I was applying for a scholarship for the next school year. She had beautiful, long red braids and a smile sparkled with sincerity. I did get a scholarship to a different house but they combined the girls who were staying over one summer and put us all together in the Pilot House, including Becky. During that summer of being housemates, she impressed me with her southern cooking specifically her mother's lima beans! Years later, each of us married and with a young daughter and son, we became neighbors again, living only one street apart. I had the honor of being her children's music teacher at Chaires Elementary. Becky had a kind and gentle soul. She loved others through her healing touch and gentle, encouraging ways. I am so glad that I knew Becky, and I look forward to being with her again someday! (((Becky)))

I have many fond memories of Becky. One in particular when she spoke a word to me about my soon-to-be-husband's ex-wife, the mother of my soon-to-be 4 yr old stepson. She told me to honor her before the Lord as his mother. It was a simple statement but it took root in my heart and I knew exactly what the Lord was saying to me. It's a long story but the end result was a pleasant relationship between all parties, where we would even spend some time together on holidays. This story is just one glimpse into Becky's kind heart and her wisdom. She will be greatly missed.

On October 15, 1988, Nurse Becky helped our family through every parent's nightmare. We did not know whether or not our only son, our 5 week old little peanut, would make it through the night. He was gravely ill in the PICU and she was on duty. She said her silent prayers with her beautiful, Mother Heart and used her Healing Hands and Calm Mind to do what they were skilled to do. She was such a blessing. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for sharing her with us.
Your family is now in our thoughts and prayers. May God's Blessings be with you all.

My sweet friend, I remember when I first met you,I didn't think we really understood each other at all. But I know in my heart,it was Gods plan all along. I enjoyed our time spent together in the PICU and me encouraging you to start crocheting again. These young nurses having babies will cherish the sweet gifts you made for them. I love you, you can rest now. Your work on earth is done.

I am very sadden to read this. Becky was a long time nurse for my son Kent, who passed away just a year ago. Kent spent all of life in and out the hospital and Becky became part of our hospital family. Shawn, Penny and Carrie Pearson

Becky touched so many lives and is responsible for so many great memories for her family and friends.

I remember her always with a smile and in good spirits. I once took a trip with her and my Mom and Lindsay in the 7th grade, during the reign of fear by the Gainesville Ripper. Danny Rolling. She kept us scaredy cats feeling safe with her calming demeanor, and I can only imagine how many of her patients this must have helped through tough times.

She will be missed dearly and remembered fondly.
