Thomas Loeb Obituary

Thomas Lake Loeb Jr.

Thomas Lake Loeb Jr. of Tallahassee died Sunday at his home after fighting a courageous battle against prostate cancer. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Fran, and children Thomas L. Loeb III (Beth), Michael L. G. Loeb, and Emily M. Loeb. Tom's family had the honor of being at his bedside during his passing.

Tom was born in Wacissa, FL on August 2, 1936, to parents Thomas L. Loeb Sr. and Edna Groom Loeb. As a child, Tom enjoyed each summer in Wacissa living with his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. E. H. "Doc" Groom. It was in Wacissa that he lived the life of a country boy and learned the ways of the nearby river. During the school year Tom lived in Jacksonville where, through friends and neighbors, he discovered his natural talent for the Spanish language. After graduating from Andrew Jackson High in 1955, he would go on to study Spanish at the Florida State University and the School of Languages at the Dept. of State in Arlington, Va. After obtaining his Bachelors and Masters degrees from FSU, he taught Spanish language and history from 1971 to 1998 on the old campus of Florida High School in Tallahassee. At Florida High Tom was well known among students for his engaging instruction and his mostly true and always dazzling tales of adventure and intrigue.

Tom also served with distinction in the US Army. He was commissioned as a 1st Lt. in 1959 and retired from the Active Reserves as a Lt. Col. in 1987. Tom earned his Army Airborne jump wings in 1963 and would go on to serve in each of several different capacities including active duties in Central America.

Hunting, fishing, and horticulture were just a few of Tom's hobbies. He was inclined to give away many of his specially grafted citrus trees to anyone who took an interest in the natural world. And when out for a stroll in the Florida wilderness, Tom always displayed a knack for finding paleo-Indian relics before anyone else did. Tom was also deeply interested in his family's history and was proud to be a fifth generation descendant of Florida pioneers.

Chapel services will be held at Beggs Funeral Home in Monticello at 1 pm, Saturday and will be followed immediately by a reception at the Mays House, 925 E. Washington St., Monticello. The family wishes to thank Big Bend Hospice of Tallahassee for their wonderful and caring service.

Fran, you have my most sincere condolences. Take your time, it takes a long time to feel normal again, but you will.

I served with Tom at the ROTC department of FSU in the late 1960's after my return from Vietnam. We shared a lot of experiences duck hunting and exploring the ruins of the 19th century village of Monticello.
I retired to Naples, Florida and thought many times of going to Tallahassee to see Tom. I was actually planning a trip this Spring. Time seems to go by so quickly. I am sorry for the family's loss and I will regret for the rest of my life that I waited too long to contact Tom.

Dear "Groom" Cousins,

I had communicated joyfully with Cousin Tom for a number of years and am already missing him terribly! One of his last emails to me let me know that his treatments were ceasing to be as effective. I am truly blessed to have known my cousin Tom and to call him my friend. Tom told me such wonderful stories of our family with such vivid detail and excitement that I felt I'd been there! You are all in my thoughts and prayers and may all your many happy memories help to comfort you during this difficult time. Please stay in touch. Much love to each of you. Lisa

Dear Loeb Family,
So sorry for your loss. Very sad to hear about Tom but as I write this I smile thinking of Tom teaching me about crabbing. Being a city boy and pulling up crab traps with him was one of the best feelings and times.

Rest in peace Senor Loeb

Fran,
So sorry to hear of the passing of your husband, whom I did not know. You and I worked together years ago at FSU personnel. You may not remember me but you and I both worked with Mary Newsome. Thinking of you today and may God give you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

As the Ferlin's next door neighbor for many years, we enjoyed Tom's friendship and his unique personality. His intelligence, zest for life and love of nature made Tom an extraordinary person. There is now a huge void in our Lanark Village community. Our condolences to Fran, Tom & Beth, Michael, and Emily. May God comfort you with His everlasting love during this difficult time.

My heart felt condolences to the Loeb Family. I can't help but smile when I think of Senor Loeb. He was one of my most favorite and memorable teachers. I learned a great deal more than Spanish in his classes. Muchas Gracias, Senior Loeb.

We all learned a lot of Spanish from Sr. Loeb, but more importantly, we learned some great life lessons. Our two favorites:

"Don't volunteer unless you know what you're volunteering for. That will get you killed in the Army." (Said to students who raised their hands to volunteer for a task without knowing what Sr. Loeb was going to ask them to do.)

"Always hire a professional to do a professional job." (Or don't try to raise your own cow for the beef. It will end up as your daughter's pet.)

Thanks, Sr. Loeb. You will be truly missed!

It has been a pleasure and honor to have known the Loeb family for more years than I care to count. I was a recipient of an infant Meyer lemon tree that is doing well thanks to Senor Loeb's instructions for care. Tom will be dearly missed. Thought, prayers and love to Fran, Tommy, Mike and Emily.

To me, Tom was a kind man and a very good listener. His words were few, but well thought out before he spoke. Tom feared God and served his country with honor. i know this and much more about Tom, because he let me get to know some of his heart. i guess i can truly say with thanksgiving, Tom was and is my friend.
May God comfort you Fran and children with his departure. Surely, he is missed.

You are in my prayers and thoughts with the loss of your husband and father. I met Tom several times as my husband was a teacher at Florida High with him years ago.
