Bob and I were fellow trombonists in the marching, concert, and jazz bands of Miami Springs Senior High School, class of 1967; we became friends. He was always first chair material and good enough to be invited to state band competitions. He was also a polished prankster and music did not escape his shenanigans. Bob, Russ, and I were three trombonists in the marching band, sitting in the stands at a Friday night football game. Russ had taught us a three-part riff we could play with me leading off, Bob joining in, and Russ following third to finish it off. I stood up alone, nervous, and did the opening bars hesitantly, then looked over for Bob to join in. He didn´t move, just sat there with this little grin while Russ was struggling to keep a straight face. I knew I was had and crumpled back down on the bench while someone nearby hollered, "What the hell was that?" I wanted to climb under the bleachers then, but today it remains a treasured moment of high school pranks and terribly funny.
Bob was extremely bright, an academic, and ran with the smartest artistic kids in the school. He could think on his feet, had strong confidence in his opinions, followed his own path, and I always thought he was two steps ahead of everyone else. He had a marvelous command of the English language and would wait patiently when discussions among his peers were going on, then say something that seemed to sum up everything perfectly, succinctly. It got to where we waited for Bob´s comment, like he was our oracle.
He was an avid reader, tore through the 007 novels of Ian Fleming, and was visibly disappointed when a favorite character met his fate. Wuthering Heights had the same effect, he said it ruined romantic love for him. He read widely and was comfortable with the classics, memorizing passages and poems he could readily recite. I think one year he took a study hall just to have more time to read. You would also find him with a worn copy of Edith Hamilton´s "Mythology", something he studied to be one of the best-informed students in Latin class.
He was very much a romantic fellow and wrote short stories about being in love, and I´m certain he had a life planned out several times with some girlfriend. I hope some of those plans came true.
Around Bob´s senior high school year his father bought a 1955 Chrysler Imperial. It was beautiful, enormous, and very pink. Bob dubbed it "Big Pink" We would all pile in and with Bob and the wheel, tool around and believe we were so very cool.
After high school he did his college freshman year in a seminary, he was a devoted Lutheran at the time. Then he transferred to USF in Tampa, I never knew what changed. Bob and I kept in touch through college, his letters were so very literary that I figured he would be a poet, or writer, or at least professor of literature. But Bob ended up in horticulture, working at several facilities in Tampa, including the Lowry. The signs were there in high school, for then he grew roses and when he talked about them, he was quite serious.
I lost touch with him after our 20-year high school reunion. But with the years and funerals piling up I began recently to search for him, only to find his too brief obituary. My regret for delaying too long is profound. He was a most remarkable and capable fellow, and his passing deserves notice. Perhaps he wanted to leave quietly, but surely he will forgive, he was my friend.

Saddened to hear this news. Prayers to his family and friends. I met Bob at Lowry and he taught me so much about plants and began my addiction to sushi. I loved how he would curse the birds in the aviary after they´d pull up newly planted plants. He will be sorely missed.
