Stephen Finnell Obituary

Stephen Finnell

Born September 13, 1947, passed away unexpectedly while mountain biking on Sunday, June 11, 2023. He lived a fruitful life. Steve was born in Albuquerque, studied archaeology at UNM in the height of the 1960s, was drafted into the Army and returned to the city to work as an Emmy-winning journalist with KOAT, a stock broker with Dean Witter, a banker and manager at Citigroup. In retirement in Taos, he worked as a children's ski instructor with Taos Ski Valley. Steve was a painter, a writer, a photographer, and even won the blue ribbon for his biscuits at the New Mexico State Fair. He ran marathons, hiked and biked mountains, was a PSIA certified ski instructor, and loved being a part of the Taos community. There's no good way to succinctly capture his life and accomplishments, but Steve was a funny, engaging, and interesting father and friend with a wide array of knowledge to impart and advice to give. He is survived by his two children Matthew and Meagan, his grandchild Soren, and will be very sorely missed. A small memorial was held on Monday, June 19, outside the El Nogal Recreation Area.

I just learned of Steve's passing. It's 2/2025. Steve was a good friend as well as a mentor when we were at KOAT together. In reading his obituary, it sounds like Steve went on to lead a very fulfilling life. I'm sorry we lost touch. Bonnie Crusalis (Smith)
