James Broadmeadow Fyfe

James Fyfe Obituary

JAMES BROADMEADOW FYFE After a 7 year battle, Jim Fyfe passed away May 28, 2008, at a local hospital. He was born April 27, 1933 in Rockville Center, New York to Harvey B. and Helen B. Fyfe, both predeceased. He grew up in Morningside, Connecticut and graduated from Milford High School. He attended Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut , before leaving to join the United States Air Force. Once he was discharged in 1956, he completed his undergraduate studies at Florida State University (FSU) with a BS in Math and Physics. He later completed graduate school courses at both FSU (majoring in mathematics) and the University of Florida (majoring in Mechanical Engineering). Jim's entire career was spent with Pratt & Whitney in Florida from 1959 until his retirement in 1992. During his career, he was fortunate to work a wide variety of jobs associated with many of the propulsion systems that were developed at the Florida facility (RL-10, SST, J58, F100, ATEGG and JTDE, and NASP). Each new assignment brought challenges and increased responsibility as he and his people were breaking new ground. The variety of jobs included: data validity; statistical analysis; engine controls and noise predictions; F100 engine development testing; developing durability/reliability/maintainability processes; marketing to and developing new technology for the US Air Force and US Navy that would later be applied to gas turbine propulsion systems; and finally, deputy program management for the National Aero Space Plane (NASP). He was actively involved during his working career with the ASME and AIAA associations and was chairman of several different technical panels at various conferences around the world. Jim is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lucy of Palm City. He was also the father to James B. Fyfe, Jr. of Stuart, Florida; Kyle F. Chandler (Joseph) of Colchester, Connecticut; Stacy F. Nordeall (Ron) of Lake Worth, Florida; and Brett A. Fyfe (Deborah) of Jacksonville, N. Carolina; and his three grandchildren, Joseph J. Chandler, Taylor A. Chandler and Brett A Fyfe, Jr. Jim was a member of the Evergreen Golf Club in Palm City and had served on the Board of Governors for 6 years with 4 years as president. Jim's life will be remembered with a memorial service at 10:30 AM, Monday, June 2, 2008 at Forest Hills Funeral Home, Palm City. A luncheon will follow at The Evergreen Club, Palm City. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of one's choice in Jim's memory.

Lucy and family, I am sorry for you for Jim's passing. Joyce and I, with our kids, moved into Juno Isles in August, 1968, about a block from the Fyfe's. I was glad to see Kyle, for a few moments, as she and our son Jamie were in school together thru high school. Regards, Jim Moore.

A transplanted Connecticut Yankee who became the epitome of a true Southern Gentleman. He had the grace and ability to put others at ease and never hesitated to go the "extra mile" in offering solutions and helping others -- he will be missed by his loved ones, friends, and former P&W co-workers.
