Mario Sanguily Obituary

MARIO SANGUILY, MD Mario Sanguily, MD or "Dr. Mario", General/Vascular Surgeon & Chief of Surgery at Martin Memorial Medical Center, Stuart Florida, died unexpectedly in his home on December 30, 2011. He was 53. To his family, co-workers and many friends, Mario was known as the man who was excited to embrace each day with a smile on his face, always in a good mood and, often-times having a mischievous prank in mind to play on the nurses, something he enjoyed very much. He was an example of someone who had great love and sincere compassion not only for his family & friends, but for his many patients along the Treasure Coast, which he cared deeply. His unexpected death is a reminder of how fleeting life can be and how every day should be lived to the fullest. He often said to others "Enjoy your life & live it", something Mario certainly did. He was a devoted husband and father, a highly regarded General/Vascular Surgeon, an exceptional athlete who loved all sports, and a dear friend. He was born in Havana, Cuba on February 3, 1958. He arrived in the United States at the age of 3, and was raised in Sebring, Florida. He graduated from Sebring High School ('76) where he was the football team's quarterback and holds a record for the most passing yards, something he was very proud of. Mario completed his undergraduate degree at University of Florida before attending Universidad Central del Este Medical School in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He returned to the United States to complete his General Surgery Residency and Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Medical College of Ohio and St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo, Ohio. It was here that he met his beloved wife and best friend, Alicia, with whom he would spend the next 20 years of his life. Mario was Chief of Surgery at Martin Memorial Medical Center and formerly affiliated with St. Lucie Medical Center. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, and Assistant Professor of Florida State Medical Center. He touched the lives of many as a stellar surgeon while also educating medical students as they prepared for their future careers as physicians. He was an ardent supporter of University of Florida. He loved the Gators<$> There was not a stat he did not know. It was not uncommon to see him watching a football game during off hours with one of his patients, in their room. Mario also enjoyed boating and fishing, beginning as a child to the Bahamas. He loved fishing and diving, embracing the Bahamian lifestyle and the people. They were his extended family, and he was passionate about sharing this part of his life with his wife and children. Together they enjoyed many memorable trips aboard the "In Situ", (meaning "it's in it's place" or "where it belongs"), Mario's beloved boat. First and foremost, Mario was a family man. He loved nothing more than to spend time with his family in the Bahamas, attend a sports event or share a Gator football game together at the stadium or from his favorite chair at home. The family attended 1 basketball and 2 Gator Football National Championships, which Mario enjoyed immensely. Mario also enjoyed hosting meals for family or friends, especially when he was captain of the grill, something he was very good at. He married Alicia on July 6, 1991 and recently celebrated 20 wonderful years of marriage. They shared a beautiful life together with their children, Brianna & Justin. Mario didn't hold back in talking about them; everyone knew how proud he was of his family. He was very involved in his children's lives, coaching sports and supportive of their academic and sports accomplishments. He was an attentive, kind and loving husband and father, and a perfect friend to many both personally and professionally. He was not one in a million<$> He was one of a kind<$>. He was larger than life! An outdoor celebration of life in Mario's honor is scheduled for 5 pm, Friday January 6, 2012 at The Mansion at Tuckahoe /Amphitheatre, 1707 NE Indian River Dr., Jenson Beach, Fl. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mario's memory to: F.C. Florida, Mario B. Sanguily MD Athletic Scholarship Fund for underprivileged children. P.O. I owe him soooo much. He saved my life. I had no health insurance and very little money. He didn't care. He said "Don't worry. I'll help you. We need to get you better." This world needs more like him. Thoughts and prayers to his family friends. God bless. Peace.

I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear today from a friend that Dr. Sanguily had passed away recently. He performed an emergency appendectomy on me just 6 months ago. Having never had surgery before, I was apprehensive, but every single one of the hospital staff that tended to me told me Dr. Sanguily was "the best!" I only had the pleasure of meeting him & briefly speaking with him once (the morning after the surgery when he came in to check on me), but I vividly remember his big smile, cheerful nature, and his wonderful sense of humor!
I wish to extend my deepest & most sincere condolences to Dr. Sanguily's family, and to all who knew & loved him. Our community has suffered a great loss. R.I.P. Dr. Sanguily, and thank you, sir, for your dedicated service.

Dr. Sanguily saved my life last September. I'm sorry I could not attend the viewing. I did go to the outdoor service which gave me some solace. Tell his wife and children they can be proud of a fantastic man he was. If I can ever be of assistance to them have them let me know. Bob Smallacombe ([email protected].

We learned just today of "Dr Mario's" passing. This was a true shock. Mario's cheerful disposition and expertise in surgery was unsurpassed as my bride has been cancer-free for seven years. Our heartfelt prayers are with "Dr Mario's" family and love ones.

We have known Mario since elementary school and graduated from Sebring High together. We just saw Mario at Sebring High 76-77 class reunion and he greeted all with a great big smile as always. Sounds like he lived life to the fullest and respected by so many in his profession. Our deepest condolences to his family.

Mario was truly one of a kind. He could light up a room and make every one laugh. A great surgoen and friend. He loved showing off his family and sharing stories. He was very compassionate. He would get teary eyed talking about Brianna going to college next year, he would tell me to enjoy every moment with my kids. I feel very lucky to have known him. He has inspired me to be to stop and enjoy life, to make every day brighter, for it is gone too fast. God bless you, Mario

I was compelled to write this message even though I never knew Dr. Mario Sanguily. My sister called me yesterday and told me go to this website to read Dr. Sanguily's obituary because he was the surgeon who operated on our mother back in late January 2004. Dr. Sanguily saved her life because the surgery was very risky and that my mother, in her mid-eighties, might not survive. She survived and lived until she was 90 years old. Reading the many tributes to Dr. Sanguily brought me to tears. You were a wonderful person and doctor. Peace to you and your family, and again thank you for your service to my mother.

Mario was doctor with a terrific personality and surgical skills to match. He had the highest regard for familly and always managed to find time to help others. He will be immensely missed.

I am John O. I live in Sacramento Ca. I was visiting Pt. St Lucie in 2005 and became very ill. Rushed to the hospital and required emergency surgery at 2:00AM. Mario was my Dr, he removed a cancerous tumor blocking my intestine. The next morning we spoke and he told me that my cancer was treatable. I am here today because Mario gave of himself for my life. Last night my wife and I were reading about the Dr. with tears streamind down our faces (as I am now), he is a hero and savior to many. Mario had his hands inside me and touched me and held me like a parent holding a new born, my life was in his hands, and he gave me life. I cherish Dr Mario, his family and friends and I will carry part of him with me throughout my life. Thank you Doc. until we meet again. With love and affection, John

I was lucky enough to meet Dr. Sanguily this past summer. It was my first time in a hospital, and I couldn't have been blessed with a more warm, caring, or lighthearted surgeon. Through the connection of our beloved college team, he gave my lonely, fearful mood courage and life. The news of his passing comes as a complete shock, and I know God is looking down on his family today. Sending lots of prayers your way, your loved one was an incredible man who touched so very many lives in his time with us.

Mario was my cousin and as the only girl I was always trying to keep up with the Sanguily Boys in Florida. They taught me to waterski, fish and enjoy the sun.
As adults with families we got together and enjoyed boating and fishing and Mario was larger than life. It was so great to connect the 2 families.
Alicia, Brianna and Justin, your father was a wonderful, loving, caring man who was part of your life for far too little.
I pray and cry and try to understand why God felt he needed him now when so many of us loved him.
All my love.

What an amazing tribute to a great man last night. The great photos and words that flowed from Mario's family, friends and associates at Martin Memorial were amazing and inspiring.

We were blessed to have built our home in 2004 next door to the Sanguily family in Windstone. I loved it when Mario would see me in the driveway or cutting the grass and shout a "HEY BIG AL". We became good friends with Mario and Alicia while our daughters Jacqueline and Natalie played tirelessly with Brianna and Justin. I had the pleasure of playing golf with Mario and Mark DiCarlo at The Floridian several times and going out on the In Situ a couple of times. Great memories I will cherish.

Our daughter, Jacqueline, who we lost in 2008, had health issues and Dr. Mario was always there for us in times of need. Mario always calmed her nerves and made her feel safe. She always said Dr. Mario was her favorite (of a long list of doctors). We will so miss his friendship, his kind, sensitive ways and his gift of laughter. I will miss you my friend. Thanks for the gift of being your friend and for teaching us all to live life more fully, to laugh and to love and to greet everyone with a smile!!

A person's life is not measured by longevity but rather the wake they leave behind. Mario's wake was huge. I like to think Mario's heart gave out because he shared a part of it with all of us.

As I approached the location of the Memorial yesterday, I felt distraught and overwhelmed with the enormity of our loss. As I departed after the wonderful Memorial, I felt better and more confident that "by example" Dr. Mario Sanguily has shown all of us how an extra moment of kindness and caring can cause a huge impact in those we meet in our daily life. I was inspired by the strength and words shared by the family. It was a special touch when Mrs. Sanguily shared the notes written in the family Christmas cards from him. As a result of his passing, I resolve to not only "enjoy my life", but to be a better person by following his clear example and lesson on "how to do it". To sum up his life, I think one words says it all: "OTHERS"!

I was so shocked to hear of the sudden passing of Dr. Sanguily. Having relocated to SLW ER I hadn't seen him in a while, but did have the pleasure of speaking with him occasionally on the phone if he was consulted for surgery. He was always so pleasant, cheerful and had a way of just making you smile. He will be dearly missed. God Bless and may peace be with you during this difficult time.

Alicia,Brianna and Justin, I am devasted to have heard this sad news, my prayers are with you. Papa I remember when Mario came to MMMC, while working in PACU, we could see the huge grin and pride on your face under your surgical mask. The same when J3 came. What a family! So much love and joy. Henry, Mrs Sanguilly, I can't say how sorry I am. Mario, you also gave my father many years pain free after the fem-pop in 1996. Please find my dad, he's most likely fishing, and go for that evasive marlin! Peace to you with love.

Dr. Sanguily was so proud of the lecture he did for the Empower support group in 2011 to an audience of approx 135 people. His humor and ability to educate was remarkable. He will be remembered and missed by every one of those 135 people, most only knowing him for that one evening. Once you met Dr. Sanguily you remembered him with a smile.

Last night I attended the Memorial Service for my friend Dr Mario Sanguily. I was awestruck by the attendance - well over 2000, There was not a dry eye in the house and truly showed the kind of man Mario was and will be in our hearts forever. I was truly honored when Alicia, his widow, mentioned my name during the service. I would always say when in the islands "it's another beautiful day in paradise" regardless of the weather or any other condition and they remembered that. WOW. Then a deep felt hug by Alicia, Justin and Brianna made my night. Mario Sanguily may be gone but will never be forgotten. RIP my fishing buddy .......FISH ON!!!

Worked with Dr. Mario in PSL ER and PACU for years. Every moment was a joy. He was always smiling, filling the room with an unspoken grace. What a tragic loss, not only to the world of medicine, but to humanity itself. We should all let Mario Sanguily be an example of how we should embrace life. My prayers and thoughts are with his wife, children, parents and brothers, and all those who were fortunate to have had him touch our lives. May the blessings be.

I had the great pleasure of working with Dr. Mario for many years at SLMC and I am so sad to see this bright light dim with his passing. He was always in a good mood, even when he "pretended" to be mad about something and had a smile for everyone. Whether he was talking (or showing us pictures) of his family, fishing trips or food, he had the same great enthusiasm for life every, single day! When Emeril became popular, we'd talk more about cooking than anything else and when I had the opportunity to go to a book signing by Emeril Lagasse in Vero Beach, I made sure to get him a signed copy. My last memory of him was at the Key Lime Cafe where I bumped in to he and his wife at lunch and I got my last, big, teddy bear hug from this great man who touched the lives of so many who were just that lucky!

January 6, 2012

So unexpected. My prayers go out to his family and friends. I remember his big teddy bear appearance and how he always made people laugh. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Alicia, Brianna and Justin, Today you celebrate the life of a wonderful husband and dad. Hold in your hearts always what a great joy he was and how he made everyone elses life that he touched better. I know the pain you are feeling and although we can't understand why things happen when they do I want you to know that you are not alone. Bob always thought the world of Mario and loved any opportunity that they could get together. One of the best days of Bob's life was out on your boat deep sea fishing. That day was a gift we both treasured and I thank you for that. Let's hope that Mario and Bob are together now fishing and having the time of their lives. My love to all of you.

My deepest sympathy and prayers to the family of Dr. Mario. I recently had surgery and was lucky to have the priveledge of Dr. Sanguily being my surgeon. He was a compassionate, wonderful man. He reassured me and made me feel at ease since this was my first time having surgery . At my post-op visit he told me to "get back at it and enjoy life". Thanks so much for sharing such a wonderful gifted man with our community. He will be missed, but I am sure God has a great plan for a man like Dr.Sanguily....

My deepest sympathy to his family. I was a patient of his many years ago and he insisted I call him Dr. Mario on my very first visit. He took great care of me throughout the years for various issues even when I had no insurance. He told me not to worry about it, and I never saw a bill. When my 4 year old son needed a surgeon, I insisted he see him. Since then I have become a nurse, and can honestly say he was one of the few doctors I have met that truly was about patient care. I even saw him in the hospital many years later and he recognized me and asked about both me and my son. Our community has not only lost a great doctor, but a wonderful person. I hope his family can find peace in knowing how many lives he touched and how many smiles he put on many many faces. He will be greatly missed.

I am glad I was able to work with you on your last case, as we jammed to Lenard Skynard, and you praised your wife and kids. You are a great surgeon and even better man. My thoughts and prayers for your wife and children.

A good man died and my heart is bruised, "Mario the Magnificent" is what I called him, always an advocate for the patient and the nurses...never a harsh word, always willing to listen and then accommodate the need. He was a gentle soul and we all knew it... now gone from sight but not memory. It is so hard to grasp, a blink of the eye and all is gone, but not lost. So as the new year starts we have the power to perpetuate his spirit and memory. Keep him in your heart as I do mine. Love saves his place in our hearts forever.
With deepest condolences to the family that he loved so much…

Dr.Sanguily did a lot of good during his life; which so unfortunately was cut short. He was a wonderful human being who cared for many. He always beamed goodness, happiness and care towards all. He will be deeply missed by his entire Martin family.

I'm so sorry to hear about Dr. Mario's passing. It's so heartwarming to read all these beautiful posts about what a wonderful Dr. and person he was. I worked with Mario at St. Vincents in Toledo and always felt he was one of the most compassionate and competent physicians. I have many good memories of his great sense of humor and how he made everyone feel at ease even in the most stressful situations.
My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and co-workers.

Dr. Sanguily was a wonderful colleague. He was confident without being arrogant. He just seemed to enjoy each day. He was always the one who never said no when you asked him for help. The medical community has lost a great physician. My prayers go out to his family at this time of loss.

Mario was so special that his smile and love of life were so palpable that you felt better just saying hello to him in the morning. His kindness extended from the casual passing in the doctor's lounge to taking time to be interrupted and talk to me about a complicated patient. He was willing to help one of my patient's that no one else wanted to see, because he was genuinely concerned. Time after time patients commented on how carng and compassionate he was with them. I will always remember him smiling and joking and talking about going to have fun in the Bahamas. He remains a role model as a fine doctor and a happy, life-loving person.
My sincerest sympathies to his family.

There are no words that can properly express our feelings for the loss of Mario to His family. Please accept these simple words. Mario was a gentleman, a talented surgeon, and an all round nice person.  Our community has also experienced a tremendous loss with his passing.  He will be remembered for the countless good things he accomplished.

For more than two decades, I had the distinct honor and privilege of working with Mario as a fellow surgeon. I'll never forget in the mid-1980s, his father Dr. Julio proudly introduced him to me as the newest addition to the medical staff. Immediately, Mario's unique infectious grin and jovial manner shown through from the beginning. I knew in Mario we not only had a talented, superbly trained physician, but a truly empathic doctor who could relate to each and every patient as if he were family himself.

Mario's kind, gentle, and joking bedside manner would be emulated by many, but never totally duplicated, as Mario set the standard for what we all seek in a physician. It is truly edifying to see that as an FSU Professor, he was a role model and mentor for many medical students. As a consultant in the O.R., Mario was always able to lend his special surgical expertise in helping others through many challenging cases. His help can never be totally repaid.

No one could ever tell a Bobby Bowden joke like Mario……..the most likable Gator anyone has ever met! We'll never forget the laughter, the fishing stories, and the great times. The Martin Memorial Community, its medical staff members, and patients have lost a physician flagship. To his family, Alicia, Brianna, Justin, Julio Jr., Julio III, and Lily, our most heartfelt condolences. Mario, we will miss you, my dear friend!

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but an entire life to forget them. Mario, you will never be forgotten!! In memory of how you lit up every room with your genuine smile and laughter, at 6 p.m. the nurses at Martin Memorial Hospital will be lighting candles at your service in memory of you. Please whoever reads this bring a candle for you and others to light. SKIPPY

I owe my life to the skill of Dr. Sanguily. When I went to see him for a post-operative visit last September, he told me that I was healing myself and to keep up the good work. He smiled and told me he would see me again in 6 months. He was truly a good man and a great healer.
