Lawrence Gunder Obituary

Lawrence Owen Gunder

February 24, 1938 - November 2, 2024

Lawrence Owen Gunder Jr, known as Larry, was born on February 24,1938 in Elyria, Ohio. On November 2, 2024, he passed away peacefully in his home in Longview, WA surrounded by his loving wife of over 60 years and their daughter.

Larry graduated from Elyria High School in 1956. On August 8, 1956, he joined the United States Air Force, where he served five years until being honorably discharged as an Airman First Class, A1C. He received the Good Conduct Medal as well as an Air Force Longevity Service Award.

Larry was also very proud and enduring of his wife Val. They met in the Air Force, fell in love and never looked back. There are many memories of adventures together driving fast corvettes, the '64 impala convertible and mustangs, competitive archery, family hunting seasons and fishing with Val's dad on the Columbia River, and even smooth dance moves on the roller-skating rink. Larry and Val enjoyed 64 years of loving marriage together.

Larry was always the life of the room, talking to everyone and ensuring all folks were recognized. You would always know when he was around, by hearing his cheerful voice and distinct laughter. Larry was involved in Camp Fire and Boy Scouts of America, helping his daughter and three grandsons achieve the highest ranks. He looked forward to his monthly Weyerhaeuser Retiree breakfasts. He was a long-time member of the American Society of Safety Professionals. He never missed an Elyria high school class of '56 reunion. He was an avid wood carver with the Lower Columbia Woodcarvers Association. He loved to create unique wood carvings, ranging from small animals, to cartoon style characters, and beautiful works of art. He was undeniably a people person!

Larry is survived by his wife (Dorothy "Val" Gunder), daughter (Tammy Free), sister (Jan Schreiber), grandsons (Jesse, Jammer and Josh Free), great grandchildren (Kason, Cooper, Rylee, Karter and Kenna Free). As well as many sister and brother in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Services commemorating his life will be held on November 21, 2024, at Longview Memorial Park. The service will start with viewing at 10:00 a.m. followed by a service at 1:00 p.m., a graveside veteran salute at 2:00 p.m. and a reception concluding at 3:30 p.m.

All who knew and loved Larry are welcome to join in celebrating him.

Larry was a pleasant, wonderful, good natured friend. He was always willing to help and support our Columbia-Willamette Chapter (St Helens Section) of the American Society of Safety Professionals. Larry's service to our chapter spanned over 4 decades. Larry was fantastic as nurturing and sharing his knowledge with others to make any/all workplaces safer places to work. He will be dearly missed.

Love to the family.

What can I say? Larry was one of our best friends for over 40 years. He will be greatly missed. We moved to AZ in 2017 and still visited once a year and emailed and talked on the phone daily. He was a wonderful person.
