Steven Pinard Obituary

Lifelong local resident Steven Eugene Pinard, 55, of Kelso passed away Feb. 18, 2009, at Oregon Health Science & University Hospital in Portland.

He was born Nov. 3, 1953, in Longview to Frank and LaDonna (Giles) Pinard and graduated from Clatskanie High School in 1972.

Steve retired from Weyerhaeuser in 1992 after 20 years of service. He then coached boys and girls Rainier Middle School basketball for 14 years. He took great fulfillment working with these kids and instilling in them a love of the sport. He helped coach "The Fury" fifth grade girls tournament basketball team. He was a league pitcher on slow pitch softball teams for many years at Roy Morris Park and for tournament teams, playing up and down the Washington I-5 corridor. Steve also managed some of those teams. He bowled league on Hilander teams. He loved to sturgeon fish and was always ready to throw a line in the water for a while. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed making items for friends and family. The biggest joy of his life was being a stay-at-home dad for his daughter, Stevie.

Steve was a people person and a friend to everyone. He could strike up a conversation with anyone any place. He was the type that was always willing to drop whatever he was doing when a friend needed his help.

He married Donna Katon in Clatskanie in 1976. They later divorced. In 1990, he married Marilyn Cullen in Longview. She survives him at home. Also surviving are a daughter, Stevie Pinard at home; two sons, Russell (Denise) Pinard of San Diego and Jacob (Candace) Pinard of Vancouver; his mother, LaDonna Pinard of Clatskanie; two brothers, Ed Pinard and Doug Pinard, both of Clatskanie; two sisters, Kathy Hamilton of Clatskanie and Cindy Burns of Rainier; and two grandchildren, Tristen Pinard and Ava Pinard, both of San Diego, and one on the way, Braxton.

His father, Frank Pinard, preceded him in death Oct. 31, 2003.

A celebration of Steve's life will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Faith Family Christian Center in Longview with a luncheon to follow. The Rev. Bob Giles Sr., will officiate. Viewings will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park & Crematory.

Account #423642 has been set up in Steve’s honor at Fibre Federal Credit union to sponsor deserving kids in the Rainier Middle School and Kelso Girl’s Youth Basketball programs.

I cant believe how hard it is to say goodbye to such a great friend. He was always there to bowl with, play ball with but especially to fish with. He was the one other person who would fish the ladder hole and go up and down to get all those fish besides myself. We had some great times together. Take care Marilyn and Stevie.

My heart goes out to you at this time and in the days ahead. I just wanted to say that I appreciated Steve for all his years of coaching. He coached 2 of my girls in jr. high basketball in Rainier. I appreciated him as a person, and I knew he enjoyed what he was doing. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Dear Marilyn and Stevie, Steve will be greatly missed. It will not be the same this coming season not being able to talk to him on those warm summer days. He was one of the greatest neighbors anyone can have. As you two are also. Sincerely, your neighbors, Mike & Sue.

I met Steve 10 years ago when he recruited me to play on his softball team "The Naturals"! That team name describes Steve to a T. He was a natural coach, friend. He will be missed by the players and the field!

Marilyn and Stevie we just want you to know that you are in our prayers. We had only met Steve just once and that was on our visit to your house. He was such a wonderful person and made us feel so wanted and loved. I know that we will always carry that moment in our hearts.

We were honored to have know him and been a part of his family. He was honored, loved and respected by so many for so many reasons, as a husband, father, brother, son, friend, coach and player. A man that stood tall, gone but never forgotten, will dearly be missed by all. Marilyn and Stevie we love you.

I had the honor of playing with Steve on several softball teams in the last couple years. Steve was far more than a great ball player, he was the glue that kept many teams together. His positive attitude encouraged many players to "just keep trying." There will be a void on our fields that no one can fill for years to come. But the memories of this wonderful human being will keep his spirit alive! Thank you Marilyn and Stevie, for graciously sharing him with us!
