Daniel Drooz Obituary

Daniel B. Drooz, age 61, died December 24, 2006. He was born March 27, 1945 in Wilmington, DE to Rabbi Herbert E. and Florence Z. Drooz.

A graduate of P.S. duPont High School, Bachelor of Arts from Antioch College, Masters Degree from University of Michigan Graduate School of Communications, PhD in History from Union Institute. He was producer of evening news in Pittsburgh, PA; District of Columbia and worked for Reuters News Agency; a foreign correspondent as an investigative reporter for the Middle East and South Africa. He won various awards for his reporting including a Canadian "Pulitzer" prize for his story on the raid on Entebbe.

His important research on American POWs held in concentration camps during World War II was recently published as a book. In recent years, he taught History and English at Wilmington College. He was an accomplished photographer, a member of the National Press Photographer's Association, National Writer's Union, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Jewish World Congress and maintained a life long connection with Congregation Beth Emeth in Wilmington.

Dan enjoyed playing the Bag Pipes. He was an avid reader and his interests ranged from archeology, American Civil War, international politics and warfare.

He is survived by his wife, Angela; son, Andrei; step-son, Michael Philipp; sister, Johanna D. Drooz Yoffie; brother-in-law, Alan S. Yoffie and their children, Victoria, Abraham and Isadora and Alexandra and Nathan Sleeper; his aunt, Anita Z. Oren; uncle, Arnold Drooz and their families.

Funeral services and burial were December 27, 2006 in Wilmington, DE. A Shiva service will be 7 P.M, Sat., Dec. 30 at the home of Allan & Johanna D. Drooz Yoffie, Worcester.
