Daniel O'Neil Obituary

Daniel O'Neil

SANTA FE, NM - Daniel O'Neil died suddenly on Thursday, September 11 at home in his beloved Dogpatch. Born in 1948 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, to Herbert and Nancy O'Neil, Danny attended Auburn High and graduated from Tufts University with a B.S. in Geology in 1972 after spending several years working in the anti-war movement and the Progressive Labor Party. Dan moved to Santa Fe in the late 70's where he landed a job at Merrill Lynch. He then moved to New York City and worked on Wall Street as a stockbroker and analyst until returning to Santa Fe in 1991. In recent years, Danny became involved in youth mentoring and coaching Little League baseball. Through this work, he had a tremendous impact on many children and their families. Dan is survived by his wife, Robin Smith, brother Jim (Joan) O'Neil of Holden, MA and sisters Mary (Bruce) Willoughby and Cathleen (Ed Dumas) O'Neil, both of Fitchburg, MA, as well as many nieces, nephews and several stalwart pups. He also leaves behind his "Little Sister," Carrie Roybal and her family. He was generous friend and mentor to many, a world-class cook, a writer, and athlete, a raconteur, a book lover, an accomplished poker player, a whisky connoisseur, a gardener and a pilot. He wrote under the name John Dublin and boxed under the name Mysterious Dan O'Neil. He touched many lives and will profoundly missed by all who knew him, old and (especially) young.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern New Mexico or your favorite charity promoting child well-being or social justice. A celebration of Danny's life will be held in Santa Fe in October.

Robin and Family, I'm very sorry to hear of Danny's passing. He was a boon companion during the early days in Dogpatch - an intelligent and witty man with a great sense of the absurd - just what we needed out there in the wilderness. I imagine he's making the best of his new existence.

Robin, this is very sad to hear. I've only met Danny a couple times while working with you and it showed the love you had for each other and the extraordinary life you led together. I'm thinking of you during this difficult time.

Robin, we think about you and the pups every single day. Danny was an incredible man full of love for the little ones, be it 2 legged or 4. His commitment to introducing kids to aviation was just another facet of the man that will be missed by many, especially the pilot community. Danny, fly high on your new wings and be our guardian angel in the skies!
Our hearts and prayers are with you Robin.
Much Love

We are lucky to have had Danny in our lives, coaching our boys, questioning our beliefs and making us laugh. What a gift. We send love and gratitude to his family.

I was so sad to hear of Danny's passing. It has been a while since I had seen Dan but he was always so kind and generous. I know he was an accomplished stock broker and it sounds like he lived a great life.
May he rest in peace.

It saddens us to hear of Danny's passing… He was our "Afternoon Regular" at The School of Baseball with his "Little League All Star" as we called her. He will forever be remembered as a man who gave the world much more then he took… Our deepest sympathy to his family and friends. Our prayers are with you. Denice, Jude, Mikey and Derek
