George Coonan Obituary

George F. Coonan, 75, of Dudley Road, died suddenly on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Cape Cod Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lillian A. (Anderson) Coonan; three children: Thomas F. Coonan and his wife Linda of Charlton, Daniel P. Coonan and his wife Audrey of North Oxford, and Cathleen A. Coonan and her husband Ed Diaz of Oxford; two sisters: Gladys Coonan and Ethel Elliott, both of Oxford; four granddaughters: Taylor, Peyton, Caitlin, and Riley; and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph C. Coonan of Oxford, who died in 1999; and three sisters: Doris Marsh of Dudley who died in 1985, Jean Antos of Dudley who died in 2001, and Olive E. Coonan of Oxford who died in 2005. He was born in Oxford, the son of the late George F. and Gladys H. (Ellis) Coonan Sr., and was a lifelong resident of Oxford. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1951. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War, proudly serving aboard the U.S.S. Northampton.

Mr. Coonan was a service manager at Pitney Bowes Corporation in Waltham for 37 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of St. Roch's Church in Oxford and the 200 Sportsman's Club in Webster. He was a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 4241 in Oxford, and was a 4th degree Knight with the John Cardinal Wright Assembly. Mr. Coonan enjoyed the Red Sox and the Patriots. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, quahogging, and loved Cape Cod.

A funeral will be held on Monday, June 29, 2009, from Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Roch's Church, 332 Main St., Oxford. Burial will follow at St. Roch's Cemetery, Oxford. Calling hours are Sunday, June 28, 2009, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in George's memory to the Oxford Free Public Library, 339 Main Street, Oxford, MA 01540.

Dan and Audrey, I am so sorry....the words just seem so empty, but just know that I'm thinking of you and you and your family are all in my prayers.
Also remember the wonderful times you had with your Dad, Dan.....he was a great guy.....I remember my younger years living in Qxford.
