Marie Cousy Obituary

Marie A. Cousy
WORCESTER - Marie Agnes Cousy, "Missie," died peacefully in Worcester on Friday, September, 20, 2013. She leaves this world a better place because of her time with us. She leaves behind a devoted husband, Bob, two cherished daughters, Marie and Ticia, two kind grandchildren, Nicole and Zachary, and two loyal sons-in-law, Bruce and Randy.
Missie grew up in St. Albans, Long Island, New York. She attended Bishop McDonald High School and Queens College. Missie enjoyed her work at the Gertz Department Store, where she worked as a high school student in order to support her family, and worked her way to the head of the Invoice Department.
Missie and Bob met in the St. Albans neighborhood, where Bob played ball with her brother Eddie. Their 63 years of marriage followed four years of courtship. Their romance grew as they aged; it was common to see them walking together holding hands.
Many people have expressed appreciation for Missie's kindness, quick wit, engaging political conversation and feisty support for the underdog. She championed the civil rights of her African American fellow citizens and friends, the peace movement, and veterans' issues of various kinds, among other causes of the disenfranchised and battles of the heart. As one friend stated, "She was a 'hot ticket.'"
Missie's kindness to others extended to mentoring new wives into the Celtic "wives row." She was as well known within the Celtic family as her husband has been outside it.
Raising her daughters was full time work. Motherhood was her calling. Missie became a Girl Scout leader, and helped out at her daughters' schools, for instance by driving the nuns to appointments. She also was a dedicated gardener, tended her bird feeding stations, read the newspaper daily (underlining as she went), and trained her dogs who in turn warmed the family's heart. Whether it was in Worcester, or at Camp Graylag in the summer time, Missie embraced life to the fullest.
Missie was predeceased by her siblings James, Marian, and Edward.
The funeral Mass will be Tuesday, September 24, at 11 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St., Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers those wishing to honor Missie can make a donation in her name to either Hope Lodge, 7 Oak St., Worcester, 01609 or the Nativity School of Worcester, 67 Lincoln St., Worcester, 01605.
The Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester is directing arrangements.

Bob, Marie & Tricia,
I always remember Missie on 9/20, and lots of other days. She was a treasured friend to my mother and our entire family and Marie & Tricia were wonderful friends to my twin sister Margie and me. Missie taught me many things about kindness, friendship, sacrifice and having the courage of your convictions politically and being willing to take part in our democracy and fight for what is right and the rights of all people. She had a serious side and also a wonderful and endearing sense of humor. I remember her unique laugh. I loved playing with Marie & Ticia as children and I treasure the memories. Hod Bless you Bob, Marie & Ticia on the anniversary and each day that follows. Your Mom was one of a kind ..... I carry her in my heart always. My love to you, Ellie Mahoney Nagle

Bob, Marie & Ticia,
Whiles it´s hard to believe it has been 10 yrs since Missie died, it´s easy to say that I still carry a bright light in my memory and my heart for her remarkable gift of friendship to my Mom, and her gift of happiness to me and my entire family. I covert wonderful memories of play dates with Marie and Ticia while Missie & Arline (my mom) sipped coffee and talked about all the social issues of the 1960s. I remember that my mom was with Missie helping her get settled into her new house on Salisbury St the day President Kennedy was assasinated. I remember her warmth and nurturing presence at my mothers bedside during Moms last days at the Rose MONAHAN house. I remember happy times with Marie & Ticia and my twin sister Margie playing in the Cousy´s home and looking forward to whatever snack she would offer. As I grew older, I remember stimulating conversation on Civil rights and Woman´s rights and issues of the day. She was a beautiful lady, inside and out, a loyal and generous friend and a steady rudder when one was needed. Ten years have not diminished my love and admiration for her and her precious family. May God Bless and keep her family, and I thank God for the privilege of knowing this remarkable woman and her incredible daughters and husband. May her light shine brightly forever. Love, Ellie Mahoney Nagle

My mother, Harriet Brannum, just found out that Missy had passed and has spent the morning telling me stories of Missy's kindness and faith. When my mother was pregnant with one of my brothers Missy insisted on driving a great way to have a baby shower for my mother even though Missy had just lost a baby of her own. Not many people would have the fortitude and kindness to do such a thing. The Brannums are thinking of the Cousys.

From the O'Connor's of Augusta Maine
51 years ago My Dad befriended the Cousy's and ALL Coaches & people associated with Graylag for 7 years…Mrs Cousy took care of me when I Attended the camp in 1969 with my Brother Joe. My next encounter with her was in her home in August 2012 for 4 hrs. I got to fill up her Bird feeders and read from a diary my dad had written about her and all others at Graylag. She talked about her daughters, her husband and what ‘Doc' Rivers should be doing with the Celtics. She talked about the Maintenance worker at Graylag that took care of the place for 17 years…She fed me lunch. She made me feel as if I was the most important person in the world. Finally a long hug and a kiss as if I were her only son. Simply a marvelous Lady.

Sincerest sympathy to all of the Cousy family on the passing of such a devoted mother, grandmother and wife to all of her family. I and my teammates of Coach Cousy's first Boston College basketball team remember the gracious host that Mrs. Cousy was to us all in welcoming us to her home to celebrate that inaugural season. Her thoughtfulness in reaching out in conversations to us at that time only mirrored the legacy that she had provided to the wives of her husbands Boston Celtics teammates in previous years. It is with prayerful admiration and respect that we remember her. Sincerely, Jim Nelson Boston College 1965

Mr. Cousy, Ticia and Marie - My deepest sympathy to all of you on Mrs. Cousy's passing. She was a beautiful person inside and out, and I know how much you will miss her! When my sisters and I were walking to Blessed Sacrament School on a rainy or snowy day, she (or Mr. Cousy) always stopped and picked us up - small gestures, but so thoughtful and remembered still 50 years later! My prayers go out to all of you, especially to Ticia, a classmate from the Class of 1967 at Blessed Sacrament.

Dear Mr. Cousy,

I never forgot this story: A friend of mine's son got in a car accident near your house years ago, before the age of cell phones. He needed to call the police and went to the nearest house, doubting that someone in your neighborhood would even answer the door. Not only did Mrs. Cousy answer, she brought him in, sat him down, gave him some water and offered food, comforted him and and made him feel like family until the police arrived. That act of kindness was never forgotten, nor will she be.

My sincere sympathies go out to you and your loved ones, but hopefully knowing that others were recipients of her thoughtfulness and kindness, and will never forget her, will lighten the load of your heavy burden at this time.
