David Bigham Obituary

Bigham, David Wynn age 41, of Shorewood, passed away suddenly on February 22, 2012. Preceded in death by brothers, Bobby and Timmy. Survived by wife Susan (nee Itschner) and children, Wynn David and Emma Elizabeth; parents, Vernon E. and Wanda M. (nee Skeie) Bigham; siblings, James (Cindy) Bigham, Nancy (Dan) Sheran, John (Lisa) Bigham, Mark (Renae) Bigham as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Vibrant and dynamic, David exhibited a zest for life that touched all who knew him. "Biggie" or "Bigsy" made friends easily with his warm smile, sense of humor and undeniable charm. David was born on September 20, 1970 to Vernon and Wanda (Skeie) Bigham in Mankato, MN. He attended Mankato West High School where he excelled in athletics. His talent was evident at a young age as he was scouted while still in high school by both the NHL and the MLB. David was a standout hockey player for the St. Paul Vulcans of the United States Hockey League during the 1989 - 90 season. He was recruited by Bob Gebhard and drafted by the Minnesota TWINS in 1989. During his 8 seasons with professional baseball, he played for the TWINS, White Sox, Mets and Orioles organizations. In 1993, he married Susan Ellen Itschner, of Owensboro, KY, who remained the love of his life for 19 years. Together they raised two beautiful children and not only were they partners in life but were also partners in business. David was a successful realtor, who worked for Edina Realty and ReMax Results for 15 years, where he was continually ranked as a top seller. He was recognized nationally as a Top 1% Realtor and was named a Super Agent by Mpls/St. Paul Magazine and Twin Cities Business. David played for the 10 time state champion Minnetonka Millers. His real life success was his connection with people. David especially treasured coaching his own children and in turn became a mentor and role model for the youth of Minnetonka. A beloved figure in the community, he endeared himself to all, making everyone feel special by giving them unique nicknames. He will be remembered as a man who brought joy and inspiration to others and as a devoted husband and father who lived for his family. Visitation will be Sunday, February 26th from 3-6 PM at Huber Funeral Home, Eden Prairie Chapel, 16394 Glory Lane, Eden Prairie (1/2 mi. S. of Hwy. 5 on Cty. Rd. 4). A celebration of life service will be Monday, February 27, 2012 at 11 AM with a visitation at 10 AM at Westwood Community Church, 3121 Westwood Drive, Excelsior (952-224-7300). In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dave Bigham Family Memorial can be mailed to PO Box 603 Excelsior, MN 55331 or dropped off at the Excelsior branch of the TCF Bank. Vern and Wanda and family of Dave,

Our sincere deepest sympathy to you. We had the privilege to enjoy Dave playing High School hockey with our son Scott here in Mankato. What wonderful memories. What a hard worker he was playing hockey which certainly showed in his future life as he accomplished so much in his 41 years.

David you will indeed be missed! I was blessed to count you as a colleague in the REALTOR family.

Maria and Greg Slusser

February 28, 2012

Dear Susan, Wynn and Emma,
We want to express our deepest heart-felt sympathies to you all. The community lost an extraordinary neighbor, coach, father, husband and friend. Although we have only been in Minnesota for 6 years, we felt so fortunate to count Dave as one of our dearest neighborhood friends. We will remember fondly the time Greg and I were out to dinner and got a call from our kids that there was a huge pumpkin stuffed with firecrackers going off in our front yard...the culprit Dave! Then there was the night Dave took Jan Finken's Husker sports chairs, secured them to the flag pole line and sent them to the top! The service today was about a man who everyone adored, and who made everyone laugh. We open our hearts to help you through this challenging time. As Jan Finken poignantly remarked when we learned of Dave's passing....."Heaven just got a lot more fun!". In deepest sympathy, Mara and Greg Slusser

He was instrumental in my own healing 2 years ago when I got hit by that baseball. He always called me "smiley" and was one of the only adults I knew who would be the one to initiate a conversation. He would give me rides home even though he lived across town. Dave Bigham was a great man who lived an even greater life, and I'm sure gonna miss him

Yesterday, I went to the Visitation for David, it was overwhelming to see so many people gathered to show their respect for a joyful person such as David. Your Father touched many people with his love for everyone he came in contact with. He will live on in all of you and will be remembered by all of us. He set an example of how life should be lived, which was Joyful!

Nancy, Wanda, Vern, David, & Family,
My memories go way back...David, you are 4 years old, Nancy and I are 18, often taking you with us on our driving errands because you and Wanda insisted we include her baby brother. We even took you cross country skiing. I marveled at Nancy's teenage willingness to always include you albeit not always popular with the other teenagers. I have fond memories of being invited to go camping one time..Wanda at the wheel, Nancy and I in the last seat of the station wagon with David, Mark, John in the middle. I always thought what it must be like being the only girl in a family of all boys! David, your sister Nancy adored and nutured you as she did all her brothers all the time. Wanda, my heart breaks as only another mother can know..having just lost my precious son Conner in June at 18 yrs. old -yet to experience the wonders of his life -forever young. Nancy, I will think of you always as I strive daily to find peace also. David, my Conner was also an athlete who loved and played baseball and hockey. Coach and play with him will you..? My love to all for eternity. Nyla Alderton & Family

Sue, Wynn and Emma,

How lucky were my boys to cross paths with Dave at Bennett Park? His kindness, fairness and overall fun loving personality sold Danny on him immediately. I think even 10 years later, there isn't a time when Danny hasn't mentioned him or told me a story courtesy of Dave. Dave took a special interest in Nick while he played at MHS....not just baseball lessons, but life lessons as well. I always meant to thank him, but I never took the time. I'm thanking you for sharing him now. He touched so many kids, so many families and speaking for my family, we are all so much better for knowing him.
May God give you strength in the days ahead. Know you are always in our thoughts and prayers.

Love,

The Baseball Family has lost a Great Brother:

Dave, I first met you back in the 80's when you were a stud pitcher on your Babe Ruth team. You were in the State Tourney in Moorhead. Me, I was a grounds keeper at Matson Field, (my front yard in Moorhead) and an Umpire in that same tourney. I was behind the plate calling the balls and strikes for one of the games you pitched. You had a pitch with much movement and I asked you how you threw it. You showed me a modified split finger pitch with your middle finger on top. I, and you, know what you called it, but I'll keep this G-rated.
Years passed, and one Spring Training of 1990 at the old Lee County Complex, in Fort Meyers, two pitchers whose paths have crossed a few years earlier, were running foul poles after our morning workouts. I asked," Bigham, your from Mankato"? you answered, "yeh, I am". I asked, "Did you play in a Babe Ruth State Tournament in Moorhead a few years back"? And you said, "Yes, and you were the Ump behind the plate"!
Once Dave met you he never for got, a great person, teammate, friend, mentor and family man. I know there IS baseball in heaven. For the Bible starts out with:

In the Big Inning...... Dave, I hope with time you get yourself on a great roster up there. The competition has got to be great with all those to proceed you. I ask one favor of you; Please put in a good word for me and try get me a good roster spot. The Bull Pen would be fine!
Your friend, Chad Swanson

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Bigham family, friends and associates....
