I'm so sorry to hear of Dr. Fielder's passing. I remember fondly the times that he would send students to St. Vincent de Paul school to do dental health instruction for the students and them knowing that one of those students was his son.
Looking back, I realize that this was an exercise in human/community relations, not just dentistry.
Please know that you are in my prayers during this difficult time.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Fred Fielder which I read it in the newspaper today. I was made joyous of his life and what the intersection of his life and mine has meant to me.
I arrived in Nashville to work at the Department of Veterans Affairs in July 1978 and I expressed to my Chief of the Dental Service, Dr. Jack Tyson, that I was interested in teaching. He made arrangements for me to meet Dr. Fred Fielder who at that time was the Chairman of the Department of Operative Dentistry. We had an interview that was cordial and welcoming and I began working as a volunteer as a clinical instructor in the Department of Operative Dentistry one afternoon a week. I had the blessing of working with some of the giants at Meharry's School of Dentistry: Wlliam Watson, Eugenia Mobley, Fred Fielder. This volunteer activity and granted time off from the VA continued until I retired from the VA in January 2014 at which time I joined the Faculty on a full-time basis, where I remain today.
In 1980 Dr. Fielder and I were talking about Operative Dentistry and he mentioned that there was a conference at the University of Kentucky in October called the Consortium of Operative Dentists in Education. I expressed an interest and he invited me to go. I have maintained an interest and have participated in this conference for most of the meetings over the past 37 years and plan to meet with them against this October at the University of North Carolina.
We have maintained a friendship over the years even after he moved onto become Dean and into retirement. We shared the common interest of helping with Meals on Wheels. Dr. Fielder has had an influence in many ways in my life and I am deeply appreciative of him and his life well-lived.

Fred and I were chemistry partners for 4 years at Tougaloo and Vivian and I were roommates. We were all very close over the years I'll cherish our last visit last summer when Roland and I got a chance to visit while attending a family reunion. We love you Vivian. May God hold you and family in his arms. Sondra and Roland.
