Springfield, TN

Oscar Clayborn Akins, age 78, of Springfield, died Monday, July 17, 2017 at his home. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 11am in the chapel of the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Pleasant View with Reverend Linda Thompson officiating. Burial followed at EverRest of Cheatham with Eddie Arnold, Tanner Landrum, Brandon Landrum, Less Richardson, Corey Richardson, Andy Robertson, Jay Jones and Mark Cox serving as pallbearers.

The family received friends on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 from 4-8pm and again on Thursday from 10am until the hour of service at 11am.

Mr. Akins was born August 18, 1938 in Nashville, TN to the late Henry and Lilly Pearl Tidwell Akins. He was a farmer and member of the Martin's Chapel Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents Mr. Akins is preceded in death by his brothers, G.H. Akins, Leslie Akins and Jimmy Dale Akins; his son, Bobby Akins; and is great-granddaughter, Mattie Akins.

Mr. Akins is survived by his wife, Betty Hopkins Akins; sons, Terry Akins of and Timmy (Carol Ann) Akins, both of Springfield; daughter, Tammy (Eddie) Arnold of Adams; brothers, Herman Akins of Springfield and Ernest Akins of the Phillipines; sister, Joyce Houchin of Madison; grandchildren, Stephanie Akins, Tanner Landrum, Haley Akins, Molly Akins, Annsley Watts and Anna Katherine Akins; and great-grandchildren, Maddix Akins, Rilynn Landrum and Elaina Akins.

If so desired, memorial contributions in Mr. Akins' memory may be made to Martin's Chapel United Methodist Church. All donations may be sent in care of Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Pleasant View.

Oscar I was thinking about chickens and looking at the remaining Hawks I'm trying to build back up with and how beautiful they are. And it made me think of you. In my opinion and many many others, he was the greatest all around that there has ever been and will possibly ever be. I hope your family is doing well.

I've seen Mr Akins several times but had the pleasure of meeting him once, to me he's a legacy . He gave me a rooster that I couldn't afford and for that I'll always be grateful . May God keep you in his perfect peace !!! Amen!!!

I just returned from Hawaii. Wile there I heard of the passing of Oscar a friend for over 40 years. He was an icon for all in Hawaii as he was thru out his travels. He will be truly missed. My condolences to Betty and family.

Oscar was the best friend a man could ask for. I'm glad we got to share so many good times. I will miss him dearly. I can't travel now, so I'll be unable to attend his funeral but know you'll all be in my thoughts and prayers.
