David Castillo Obituary

Our beloved son, brother, father, and coach, David Alexander Castillo, passed from this life into eternity on Saturday, October 13, 2018. He was 61. David developed a love for sports at a young age playing CYO baseball, basketball, and Legion hardball, with his parents and sister cheering him on. He played on various teams including the Episcopal High School boys' basketball team. David was selected as a Basketball All-Star in 1974. David spent over 40 years of his life impacting the lives of athletes and students across the state in his time as a high school coach and educator. His tenure included assisting in football at Woodlawn High School; basketball at Episcopal High School, University High School, and Rapides High School; and baseball at Barbe High School, Bethany Christian School, and Family Christian Academy. His head coaching tenure included Boys' Basketball at Barbe High School, Bethany Christian School, Assembly Christian School, and Family Christian Academy. David was also the head girls' basketball coach at Bethany Christian School and the Head Baseball coach at Assembly Christian School and Family Christian Academy. While at Barbe, his teams in 1992-93 and '93-'94 were back-to-back quarterfinalists in Class 5A. The 1994 team lost to the eventual state-champions, Byrd High School, in a tightly contested game. David remains Barbe High School's all-time leader in wins as head coach of the boys' basketball program. In 2004, his Boys' Basketball team at Bethany Christian School advanced to the Class B State Finals while his girls' team advanced to the quarterfinals the same season. His last coaching position included girls' and boys' basketball at Family Christian Academy. David is survived by his two children, Ali C. Landry and Grant Castillo, whom he shared with former spouse, Pamela F. Kyzar; his son-in-law Brad Landry; his parents Ted and Bunny Castillo; his uncle Godfrey Grant; his sister M'Lou C. Arcuri; his nephew Andrew Arcuri; and his niece Marie-Louise Arcuri. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, A.J. and Delores Bullock; his maternal grandparents, Marie-Louise and Herbert Grant; his uncle Everett Grant; his aunt Dolores and uncle Travis Owen; and his cousin, Sandy Hollier Langston. The services will be held on Friday, October 19, 2018 at Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge. The visitation will be from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. The service will begin at 1:00 pm and the procession will leave from Family Worship Center to Resthaven Cemetery at the conclusion of the service.

Oct. 12th will always be a sad day for me; my sister Mary Beth call to give me the news of David's condition. I will miss my childhood friend. We had one of the best sandlot neighborhood groups a kid could hope for; Mike Barbae, Byron Sharp, Pug Sanchez, Bruce Dyson, my bro Buddy. You could always count on David's participation, when getting together for a pick up game, all against all and God help you if you were on the wrong team competing against David in a game of pick up . I must have played David in 1000 games of HORSE . . I never won a game; he had my number and he always had my heart. He help me become a fierce competitor and athlete. I couldn't have asked for a better childhood friend. I will always be grateful for our time together and the fond memories growing up on Finchley Ave. My heart aches for you Ms. Bunny, Mr. Ted, & M'Lou . . I am so sorry for your loss.

David Castillo had a great impact on his student athletes, not because he was a great coach who took his teams to championships and not just because he was a great math Teacher, but because he was just "Coach Costello" as they so lovingly called him. He was someone they could play for, someone who taught them, and someone they could talk to. He was genuine. He made a great impact on my son at FCA coaching him in baseball, basketball, and teaching him in the classroom. I didn't realize how much until I saw the tears in his eyes as he said goodbye.

I went to all four years at Episcopal High with David, and he was one of my very best friends there. Come to think of it, he was one of everyone's best friends there. I have many memories - all of them cherished - of hanging out at each other's houses, going to LSU football games, and particularly our Easter, 1975 trip to Pensacola with David Bujol, Conway LeBlanc & Joe Adomitis in the Bujol family's airstream. We were so naive we couldn't get in trouble at Spring Break in Florida! I must admit that I should have gotten in trouble for putting that smokebomb/firework on the ignition wires of the "Cos Comet", and I hereby offer to reimburse Mr. & Mrs. C. for the subsequent towing bill.
I am very sorry for the Castillo family and wish them the best in dealing with their grief. They were and I'm sure still are, great folks who were very kind to all of us at EHS.
To "Cos" I just want to say thanks for being my friend.

Mr. Ted, Ms. Bunny and Family:
I was shocked to see David's obituary notice this morning. It brought back a flood or good, good memories from the Old Goodwood neighborhood in the '60's and '70's. How many full speed-tackle football games were played in your front yard on Finchley Street (with no helmets or pads)? How many innings of baseball were argued over at the vacant lot on Government Street? When we played basketball in the Guillory's driveway we knew David was good, but at the time, we didn't realize the elite level of greatness that he would achieve in the years to come on the court. David was the center of our rag-tag neighborhood group of boys who wanted so badly to be great athletes. He was a natural leader and all of us (around the neighborhood and his classmates at school) looked up to him. I am so glad that I grew up with such a good friend like David Castillo.
May your good memories keep you going. Hang on tight.

Some of my most enjoyable times coaching youth baseball and basketball were spent coaching with David. Thoughts and prayers for Grant and Ali, David's parents and his sister. Rest in peace, my friend
