Joseph Greco Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Victor Anthony Greco born in Tickfaw on January 8, 1933 died peacefully on June 30, 2017 at St. James Retirement Community. He was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. After graduating from the University of Mississippi with a B.S. in pharmacy, he moved to Baton Rouge with his wife, Joan. He was later drafted into the U.S. Army at Fort Reilly, Kansas. Later, he and his wife started Greco's Drug Store, which eventually became Greco Pet and Veterinary Supply which served the community for over 55 years. Thus he became the first pharmacist to fill prescriptions solely for animals. Joe was first elected Councilman for District 4 in November 1992 to fill out an unexpired term. He went on to be re-elected to four consecutive terms on the Baton Rouge Metro Council beginning 1993-2008. He was elected Mayor Pro Tem for his final four-year term. He served on numerous boards and commissions such as the E.B.R. Parish Capital Region Planning Commission, the E.B.R. Parish Airport Commission, Louisiana Board of Pharmacy, and Central Chamber of Commerce (Formerly C.A.B.A.) One of his proudest accomplishments was seeing the Central Thruway completed of which he fought hard to get for the City of Central while in political office. One of the bridges is known to all as the Joan R. Greco Memorial Bridge. He is survived by his four sons: Perry of Baton Rouge; Kelly and his wife Kelly of Rossford Ohio; Andy and his wife Marie of Baton Rouge; Brian and his wife Ena of San Antonio Texas; and brother Cyrus J. Greco of Baton Rouge, LA and sister Carmella Fekete of Tickfaw, LA. He has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Jennifer Greco Miller of Walker, LA; Joshua Youngs of Bloomfield, New Jersey; Welcome Youngs of Greenwell Springs, LA; Christopher, Olivia and Bennett Greco of San Antonio, Texas; Christopher Norris of Newport Beach, CA and his son Kaden Norris of Baton Rouge; John Patrick Norris of Raymond, MS; Riley and Ethan Jones of Rossford, Ohio; and Jakob Miller and Dylan Miller of Walker, LA. He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Joan Reaves Greco, father, Joseph Victor Greco Sr., mother Mary Cali Greco, brother John Greco as well as in-laws, Chester and Dorothy Reaves of Oxford, MS. Joe will be remembered for his love of the Lord and the Catholic Church. He forever showed continuous compassion and caring for his family, friends and neighbors. He lived his life true to a saying he loved, "I never met a stranger." The family would like to thank our special caregivers, Miss Vee Moore, Robin Williams, Ann Scott, Jackie Miles, Jackie Barber, Marcy Wright and Geraldine Williams who took such great care of our father, as well as St. James Place Retirement Community, and especially Hospice In His Care for showing such great compassion. A special thanks to his numerous doctors and nurses. A service will be held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 14040 Greenwell Springs Road, in Central on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 with visitation from 9:30 am until Mass of Christian Burial at noon celebrated by Rev. Michael Moroney. Interment to follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Services of The Capital Area, BR, LA or a charity of your choice. I grew up on Pecos and remember how excited Halloween was because Mr Greco handed out the big candy bars. As I grew older I realized what an amazing man and his family were. Mrs Joan was the love of his life and finally he is reunited with her. My heart goes out to the family and entire Central community. What a blessing this man was and what a positive impact he made on the entire city . You will be missed but never forgotten

So sad to learn of Mr. Joe's passing. I grew up across the street from ya'll in Comite Hills and was a long time customer and friend of Mr. Joe and his family, as well as knowing Mr. Cyrus very well. He will be missed, but I know he is happily with Ms. Joan. God bless all of you as you grieve the loss of such a wonderful man at the same time celebrating his life.

Sorry to hear of Your leaving us Joe or "big junior", As we called you all of our lives. Actually, little junior as in my case. I can still remember the days while we were growing up and how we played football and boxed every time a holiday rolled around. Those were the good old days and now our good old days will be spent with our Lord. Praying for our family during this time of loss.

Cyrus and Family - our Love to each of you at this time of loss. Mr. Joe was the sort of man, and the sort of citizen, that each of
us can only aspire to be. While we did not personally know Joe well, we DO know of his positive impacts on the Baton Rouge community, his service to us all, and how he was cherished by his Family. God Bless You - Ann and John Schwab

So sorry to hear of Joe's passing. Joe and Joan bought my father's Drugstore in January of 1957. I worked for him for a couple of years while in high school and business college. Our deepest condolences to Mr. Joe's family. He will surely be missed after having contributed so much to this community. His store was a place that pets and their human companions were always welcome; and his ability to gather a staff that loved pets and people as much as he did was always appreciated. His generosity also included providing his parking lot to be a puppy training school for Mr. Dick Russell (Mr. Sit-Stay) who helped countless people learn the proper way to train their dogs.
Rest in peace, Mr. Joe. We are certain that the Lord has said, Well done, my good and faithful servant.
