Thomas Brill Heflin M.D.

Thomas Heflin Obituary

Thomas Brill Heflin, M.D., a devoted husband, loving father, caring physician, and longtime resident of Baton Rouge died at his home Monday afternoon, June 4. A native of Indiana, Pa., he was 72. He is survived by his wife, Susan Carter Heflin; three children, Thomas Brill Heflin, II and wife, Stacie Grimmer Heflin, Jennifer Heflin Shaw and husband, Harold Lyman Shaw, Jr., and Charles Frederick "Chad" Heflin; two step-children, Lee Bradley Smith and wife, Monique Martin Smith, and Renee Smith Lefeaux and husband, Eddie Lefeaux; three grandchildren, Brice Thomas Heflin, Peyton Elizabeth Heflin, and Linda Megan Shaw; and four stepgrandchildren, Madeline Lee Lefeaux, Allison Grace Lefeaux, Hannah Katelyn Smith, and Connor Bradley Smith. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda Jones Heflin; father, Harry Frederick Heflin, and mother, Helen Carney Heflin; step-mother, Alma Hathaway Heflin; and granddaughter, Lauren Adelle Shaw. As a young boy, Tom first developed his passion for golf playing with his dad. Together, they won the Indiana Country Club annual father and son golf tournament eleven years in a row. When there was no more space for engraving on the winner's cup, the club presented them with the silver cup to keep. His love of golf continued throughout his life, taking him to beautiful courses throughout the United States and Scotland, until recent illness prevented his being able to play. Even then, his golf buddies continued to drive him around the course at the Baton Rouge Country Club, for which he was most appreciative. Their annual golf trips to great courses around the country were highlights in his life. Tom graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1958, from Washington and Jefferson College in 1962 and from New York Medical College in 1967, where his medical school class celebrated its forty-fifth class reunion in May. He completed his medical residency at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn., and went on to become a major in the U.S. Air Force, fulfilling his military duty at Eglin Air Force Base in Ft. Walton, Fla., where he served as a base pediatrician. After the military, he moved to Baton Rouge in the early 1970s and practiced medicine at the Pediatric Clinic and later at the Pediatric Medical Center. In the 1990s, the partners at the Pediatric Medical Center sold their clinic to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. Tom maintained a thriving practice until his retirement in 2009. In addition to an active, forty-year medical career, Tom enjoyed an active social life. He was a member of the Baton Rouge Country Club and the Mystic Krewe of Achilles, where he served the court as its king in 1990. He also enjoyed hunting and was an avid collector of stamps, coins, and golf balls and hats from golf courses around the country. Visitation will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Wednesday, June 6 from 5-7 p.m. with a message of devotion by Reverend Chris Andrews at 6 p.m., and on Thursday, June 7 at 10:00 a.m. in the Ory Parish Hall at First United Methodist Church, 931 North Blvd., until services at noon in the sanctuary. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery, 4045 North St., immediately following the funeral service. Funeral and gravesite services will be officiated by Bishop Bob Fannin and Reverend Katy McKay Simpson. Pallbearers will be Allen Black, Bob Emmert, Gregg Fell, Frank Fertitta, Phillip Juban, and Jerry Webb. Honorary pallbearers are Don Ayres, Joe Bullock, George Burgess, Ed Jeffries, Bill Kaufman, Fred Parks, and Edgar E. "Butch" Spielman. The family wishes to thank all of Tom's friends for their continued love and support during this difficult time, as well as the staff of Hospice of Baton Rouge for the compassionate care provided to Tom during his final days. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to First United Methodist Church, Hospice of Baton Rouge, or your favorite charity.

Dear Sue & Heflin family - I was truly saddened to have learned of Dr. Tom's passing. I was out of town on the date of his funeral service; and I would certainly have been present otherwise. Having lost my own father (Mr. Jerry F. Davis) on May 9th, I share your grief). May you be forever comforted by happy memories and under the care of God's love and peace. You all have my deepest sympathies and prayers and love in these difficult days.

To Dr Heflin's family, I was so sadden to hear of the passing of Dr Heflin. I was out of town last wk. I worked with Dr Heflin at PMC for 16yrs. I surely missed him when he retired in 2009 (well deserved retirement), coming to the office so early, he was always there if we had an early morn problem always willing to help no matter what it was. He's a man, Dad and husband that you all can be so very proud of! Just remember he is no more suffering and is up above in heaven, watching over you all. You all definetly have another guardian angel, along with Mrs. Linda and Lauren watching over you all. You all will be in my prayers and thoughts. (We have all missed and will continue to miss his visits to the office)

Dr. Heflin was an outstanding pediatrian who reallly CARED for the children he saw. 34 years our baby was ill and he saw how devastated we were and he actually sat and ate dinner with us in the hospital room. I'll never forget him! Job well done, Dr. Heflin. Your reward will be in Heaven. Susan (Baton Rouge, LA)

Dr. Heflin was a wonderful Pediatrician and a great man. Our family's connection with him started in 1989 with the birth of my oldest son after which he served as all three of my children's main Pediatrician. I will never forget the late afternoon when I took my 9 month daughter in for an illness and Dr. Heflin knew right away that she would need to be hospitalized for RSV. All other office personnel left and Dr. Heflin was still there in the office with me making sure he got the right paperwork done to get my daughter admitted into the hospital as soon as possible. Bradley, Heather, and Ryan never had any fear of a doctor because of Dr. Heflin's surperb bedside manner. My condolences to Dr. Heflin's entire family.

I waited until three days before my scheduled c-section to pick a pediatrician for my son, now almost 16. Dr. Heflin had been the pediatrician for my best friend and her brothers when they were little, and they spoke very highly of him. When he called me back to his office, it didn't take 5 minutes to just KNOW that this was the only doctor my kids would ever need.

He was compassionate, he really listened, and he had a great sense of humor! Even though I was his only patient at the then-fairly-new General on Bluebonnet, he made it out there every day to check on me and my new baby.

And 4 years later, he was right there with me and my daughter at Woman's.

Dr. Heflin was so reassuring with all of the typical new-mom questions, and he sure worked hard -- I can count on one hand the number of times my kids saw one of the other docs in the group because he wasn't there when they were sick.

Just last week I brought my daughter in to Pediatric Medical Center for a sinus infection, and as we checked in, Holly said, "Mom, I sure do miss Dr. Heflin."

He was a great doctor and a great person. We will always remember him with love and gratitude.

I first met Dr. Heflin over 38 years ago when he came to Woman's Hospital to perform a newborn visit on my first child. I now have four children, all adults, and Dr. Heflin was their pediatrician. My youngest daughter even went to Dr. Heflin a few times after the age of 18 because she didn't want to see any other doctor. I am very saddened to hear of his passing. May the Heflin family find comfort in knowing he was a warm, kind, compassionate, loving and professional doctor. He will be greatly missed.

We are so deeply saddened by our dear friends passing we will never forget his compassion to us and when our beloved Jamie was dying he was there for us as a friend and our Dr. I don't think I'll ever forget when he came to the hospital on Friday night to watch the Dukes of Hazard with Jamie it was amazing it shows what kind of person he was and I don't think they'll ever be another one like him. We will miss him deeply. May God bless you and your family he was quite a man. James Debbie and Kim Roth

To The Heflin Family:
I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Heflin's passing. He was my pediatrician for many years. As an identical twin, I was the sickly one. As a child, Dr. Heflin was the reassuring voice for me the many times I wast taken to his office for treatment. I remember that he held my hand and used his comforting voice during an extensive panel of allergy tests. I will never forget his kindness and the exceptional level of care that he provided. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

With deepest sympathy to the Heflin family. Dr. Heflin was a loving, compassionate, and caring physician. He was my children's physician from birth until 18 years of age. We enjoyed every minute of him. My daughter still says to this day that she has yet to find a physician that is good as Dr. Thomas B. Heflin was to her. We will continue to keep the Heflin family in our prayers.

I am so sorry to hear this. He was my two son's pediatrician from birth till they were 18! They are in their late twenties now. They loved him, and my husband and I had peace knowing that he would be there if they were ever sick. He was always so gentle with them and they were never afraid when they went to see him. He was so comforting during those times. We will always remember him for his kindness and compassion.

It is difficult to tell you how deeply I feel about Dr. Heflin's untimely death.

What started many years ago as a business relationship since I work at the Baton Rouge Country Club and he was my children and grandchildren's doctor, turned into a warm friendship.

My son suffered a tramatic head injury at the age of 7. Dr. Heflin was a source of strength and encouragement to me and my husband.

It has been a privilege to have known him so well, and I will never forget his thoughtfulness and kindness.

With great personal sorrow, I ask to share your loss and to extend my heartfelt sympathy.
