Floyd Washburn Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Pastor Floyd Elmer Washburn, a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who left us on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at the age of 90. Floyd was a cherished resident of Mount Airy, MD, whose warmth and compassion touched the lives of many.
Floyd was born on October 16, 1934, in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, to George Perry Washburn and Laura Madeline Washburn. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Lou Washburn, whom he deeply adored and cherished throughout their lives together.
After completing five years at the Baptist Bible Seminary in Johnson City, NY, Floyd dedicated his life to pastoral work, guiding various congregations across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida, and Maryland. His most extended and heartfelt service was at Calvary Baptist Church in Glen Burnie, where he faithfully ministered from 1978 to 2008, offering Biblical teaching and ministering to the unsaved. He gave to people from a heart of generosity. Many received the benefits of his graciousness.
Floyd's life was filled with passions and joys. An avid golfer, he found peace and camaraderie on the golf course. He treasured moments playing games with his family, and in his earlier years, he found adventure in hunting. He also had a profound love for reading, which enriched his knowledge and spirit throughout his life. His greatest passion was to preach the Word and mentor and encourage young men to be future pastors. He also helped to lead and oversee Calvary Baptist Church Academy where he looked out for the welfare of teachers.
Floyd leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and commitment to his family. He is survived by his daughter Cheri Surland of Mt Airy, MD, and his sons, Joel Washburn and Jon Washburn. He was a cherished brother to Perry Washburn and a proud grandfather to Nathan Washburn, Megan Washburn, Shannon Washburn, Levi Washburn, Ethan Surland, Alethea Surland, Brianna Washburn, and Brody Washburn. Floyd's joy was further multiplied by the gift of his three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Floyd is preceded in death by his sisters Maxine Milligan, Celestine Speakman, and Deloris Moffat.
A visitation will be held at Calvary Baptist Church 407 Marley Station Road Glen Burnie, MD, on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 10:00 am to 10:45 am, followed by a funeral service at 10:45 am to celebrate Floyd's life and legacy. Interment will follow at Glen Haven Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.
Floyd Elmer Washburn's memory will forever be cherished by all who knew him. His unwavering and unapologetic faith in the Bible, his generous heart, and his ready sense of humor will be remembered and discussed for years to come.
For those who did not know my dad, I leave this verse of encouragement with you. I Thessalonians 4:13-14, "But I do not want to you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Hi those who sleep in Jesus." For the Christian, we grieve, but we don't despair! This is just another example of Floyd's teaching that is his legacy!
