John J. Hurley of Conway, retired vice president for student affairs at the University of Central Arkansas, passed away Jan. 16, 2023, at Conway Regional Hospital. He was 93 years old.
He was born Aug. 5, 1929, in Little Rock, son of the late James Ernest and Ruby Dukeminier Hurley. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rosemary; a brother, James E.; and a half-brother, Elmer Hurley. Survivors include son, Mark (Samantha); and daughter Danna Jones (Paul); four grandchildren, Mitch (Bethany), Randi Hurley, Dennis (Julie), and Robert (Misti) Jones; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hurley was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.
He attended Pulaski Heights Elementary and Junior High Schools and graduated from Little Rock High School (now Central) in 1947, where he was a member of Delta Sigma fraternity. After earning his BSE and MS degrees from Arkansas State Teachers College (now UCA) he became a teacher and guidance counselor in the Little Rock Public School System for 14 years. He then joined the administrative staff at UCA and retired in 1990, after 21 years of service.
After retirement, he became a charter member of the Conway Regional Health and Fitness Center and enjoyed working out with the many friends he made there for the remainder of his life.
Graveside services will be Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Crestlawn Memorial Park.
