WILLIMANTIC
Linda Sypher born October 27, 1936, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt and a friend to so many in our local community, peacefully passed away at home late in the evening on April 4, 2025.
The seventh of eight children born to Noyes and Mary (Riley) Wheeler, Linda finally won a friendly wager with her brother, Uncle David, who proudly proclaimed for decades that their parents had finally achieved perfection with their eighth and final child but could not dispute that SHE was always Papa and Teeny Gramma's favorite! While raising her children, Patricia, Michael and Kathleen, Linda also enjoyed a career working at Windham Town Hall, the Assistant Principal's Office at Windham Middle School, the library at Windham High School and as a secretary in various law offices as well as the office of the Honorable Joseph Mazzola. Linda was also a proud member of the Round Table, an eclectic group of individuals who met at various fine eateries to renew their friendships, tell tales and share the occasional touch of the grape.
Mom is survived by her three children and their spouses, Patricia and Richard Cavanagh of Chestnut Hill, Mass., Michael and Cathy (Huard) Sypher of Willimantic and Kathleen and David Johnson, also of Willimantic. Mom is also the proud grandmother of her four grandchildren, Katherine Cavanagh, Conor and Brenden Johnson and Hannah
Sypher. Cathy's three sons, Zachary Hope and his partner, Kelley Holden, Connor Hope and his fiance, Kristen Brown, and Michael Hope are left to keep Mom's memory in their hearts as well. Linda is also survived by her nieces, Nora, Janice, Joanne and Barbara along with countless friends with whom she created and shared memories as well as the occasional glass of white zinfandel while always reserving time to share a toast of apricot brandy with her son-in-law, David. Mom was predeceased by her parents as well as her seven siblings, Noyes Jr., Thomas, Jimmy, Mary, Jeannie, David and Katherine, also respectfully and affectionately known as Crazy Aunt Kay!
Mom was also extremely proud to be selected as Romantic Willimantic's Cupid in 2010, an honor which gave her joy for the rest of her days. Kathleen and Michael would like to especially thank Linda & closest friends including Ann Kouatly, her former mentor at Windham High who then comforted her with coffee outings and visits to her gardens, Joyce Twiss, Kitty and Bill Niarhakos, Joanne and Al Izzo and Linda Bassett, who always reminded Mom to toe the line and behave! Our former neighbor, Brian Pichette, also paid a special visit to see Mom just before she passed and received some special advice: Brian, trim your beard! Kathleen and Michael would also like to thank Mom's medical care team at Windham Hospital including nurses Karla, Heather, Susan, Jocelyn and Valerie, the Hospice Care team and Dr. Drew Myers, who so compassionately advised us during her final days with such dignity and respect There are no calling hours for Mom but Kathleen and Michael would like to welcome friends and family members to a memorial Mass at St. Joseph Church in Willimanticat 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23with a private burial at a later date at the convenience of the family. Immediately following the Mass, a reception will be held at the Franco-American Civic and Social Club in North Windham.
