John David "JD" Goodwin passed away on December 28, 2024, at the age of 85 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Born on July 7, 1939, in New Castle, Indiana, JD was a beloved figure in both his hometown and among all who knew him.
JD graduated from New Castle Chrysler High School in 1957 and briefly attended Purdue University. He embarked on a distinguished career in the automotive industry, beginning at his family's dealership, Goodwin Dodge. His passion for cars led him to co-found Raintree Auto Sales with his close friend Bruce Harvey, a venture that proved to be successful for many years. JD was a cornerstone of the car business in Henry County, with scarcely a local who hadn't purchased a car from him at some point.
Beyond his professional achievements, JD was deeply committed to his community and family. He was an avid coach for Little League basketball and baseball, proudly coaching the National League All Stars to the State final in 1971. His hobbies included grilling his famous barbecue chicken, embarking on cross-country motorcycle trips, and never missing a NASCAR race live or on television for over two decades. JD also cherished sunset cocktail cruises and fishing trips with his family.
JD is survived by his sons, Scott Goodwin and his wife Angie, and Greg Goodwin; his brothers, Bruce and Kip Goodwin, the latter's wife Sharon; his grandson Chad Melton and his wife Jenny; and his granddaughter Amy Melton. He also leaves behind his domestic partner, Sandy McFarland. JD was predeceased by his daughter Abbey Jo Armstrong, son Michael Goodwin, and his parents John K. and Jeanette Goodwin.
A celebration of JD's life was held at the New Castle Elks on Saturday, March 1 with approximately 100 family members and close friends from as far away as Hawaii and California in attendance. A good time was had by all with the highlight being a musical and video tribute to JD presented by his granddaughter Spenser. JD's life was marked by his generosity, leadership, and the deep connections he fostered with those around him. He will be remembered as a pillar of his community, a loving family man, and a friend to many.
