Joseph A. Lucca passed away Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at home, after an extended illness.
He was born in Hammonton on Feb. 20, 1927. He graduated from Hammonton High School in 1944, and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the Signal Corps in the U.S. Army's occupation of Japan. After his discharge, he enrolled in Glassboro State College and graduated in 1950. He taught English and math to sixth-graders for one year. He then went to work at the Owens-Illinois (Kimble Glass) plant in Vineland, starting out in the factory. During his 35-year career with Owens-Illinois, he also worked at plants in Chicago Heights, Ill.; Columbus, Ohio; and Pittston, Pa. He retired in 1984, serving his final nine years as plant manager of the Owens-Illinois (Kimble Glass) plant in Vineland, where he started his career. In his final years at Owens-Illinois, he also served his community in leadership roles on various commissions. In retirement, he enjoyed motor homing and traveling the U.S., making many friends along the way, and spending winters in Florida.
His family and friends will miss him dearly.He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of nearly 56 years, Harriett; his children, Michael (Donna), David (Jan), Susan Fagotti (Bob), and Patricia Gardella (Bill); and his 11 grandchildren, Laura Jean Lucca, John, Carol, and Sveta Lucca, Meagan, Kaitlin and Tanner Fagotti, and Rebecca, Adelia, Anthony and Lidia Gardella. He also leaves behind a brother, Peter Paul Lucca; a sister, Marie Cuzzilla (Steve); and three nieces, Paula Lucca, Pam Dzielak (Tom) and DoreenVitalo.
He was predeceased by a sister, Frances DiSalvo; brother-in-law, Angelo DiSalvo; and a sister-in-law, Frances Lucca.
The family will receive family and friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Padre Pio, Our Lady of Pompeii Church, 4680 Dante Ave., Vineland, followed by a memorial Mass. Interment will be private.
