Allen Rand Obituary

Lyme - Allen Rand, fondly known as "Babe" by friends and family, passed away Aug. 11, 2025, peacefully at his home at 98 Blood Street, Lyme. Allen was born Nov. 27, 1931, to Leonard Rand and Mary Daniels Rand, and raised in his family home on Sterling City Road in Lyme, until he joined the U.S. Army Reserves National Guard. He spent two years in Korea and is a Korean War veteran.

In 1953, he married the love of his life Marita Knutson of Old Lyme. They moved to Covina, Calif. where Allen worked for a rattan furniture company and as a truck driver. The smoggy atmosphere did not agree with him, so they moved back to Old Lyme.

He returned to work for Connecticut Valley Manufacturing Company once back in Connecticut. During this time, he took an electrician's course, which he applied at Connecticut Valley Manufacturing Company until the business was sold. Afterwards, Allen was hired by the Connecticut Department of Transportation where he remained until he retired.

In 1955, with the help of his father-in-law Carl Knutson, Allen built their home at 98 Blood Street in Lyme, where he and his wife raised their family and spent their remaining years.

Allen loved the outdoors working with stone, which allowed him to build all the stone walls at their home and a stone fireplace for his brother.

His hobbies included playing the guitar, hunting, fishing and woodworking. He was a gentleman farmer, he raised chickens, pigs and beef cattle, helped his daughter care for her horses, and cared deeply for his dogs through out the years.

He and his family spent many summers traveling and camping whether by tent, tent camper, truck camper or motor home.

Allen was predeceased by his wife, Marita, in 2017. He is survived by their two daughters, Andrina Monte, married to Charles Monte, and their sons, C. Andrew Monte and twin grandsons, Caden and Calvin Monte; and Brian Monte, married to Angela Newton; and daughter Terry Bischoff. He is predeceased by her husband Thomas Bischoff; and their son Travis Bischoff. He is survived by brother Fred Rand of Lyme; and sister Helene Teixeira of North Carolina; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Allen was predeceased by brothers: Oliver Rand, Samuel Rand; half-brothers, Francis Rand, Walter Dean, William Rand, Leonard Rand, Esmond Rand, Lawrence Rand and Joseph Rand; and sisters, Mary Ann Faircloth, Ruth Rand; and half-sisters, Mae Latham, Mildred Eddy and Eleanor Rand.

A Graveside Service with military honors will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Mount Archer Road Cemetery in Lyme. Please visit www.fultontherouxoldlyme.com to leave a tribute for the family.
