Burton Carlow Obituary

Bloomfield - Burton E. Carlow, 89, of Bloomfield, formerly of West Hartford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015.

He was the beloved husband of the late Marcia (Levine) Carlow for 52 years, prior to her passing in 2003. Born in New Haven, son of the late David Carlow and Jeanne (Gans) Rabinowitz, he spent 42 years as a resident of West Hartford before moving to Bloomfield in 1999. In New Haven, he attended Hillhouse High School where he was an exceptional student and the captain of its renowned rifle team. After high school, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, including being stationed at and observing the War Crime Trials at Nuremberg. He loved to talk about and share his fascinating experiences in the service, but principally loved to talk about his time at Nuremberg. His oral history of his time at Nuremberg is on display at the Dodd Center at The University of Connecticut.

Following his military service, Burt graduated from UConn with a business degree, having captained the UConn rifle team. He then went on to a long and successful career as the boys' clothes buyer at G. Fox in Hartford and later at the Youth Center in West Hartford Center. A devoted husband and father, grandfather and great-grandfather, his family was not only his primary focus, but most times was his only focus. He loved watching and talking about all activities his children and grandchildren were involved in. He always articulated how proud he was of each and every one of them. He also religiously watched his New York Giants, Red Sox, Yankees and Mets.

Burt leaves three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Susan Carlow of Denver, Colo., Steven and Andrea Carlow of Mystic and Brian and Ramona Carlow of Cheshire; seven grandchildren, Allyson (Carlow) Abbey (and her husband Gerald Abbey), Jeffrey, Gregory, Amanda, Kevin, Kathryn and Sarah. He also leaves one great-granddaughter, Marcía Abbey.

Burt was predeceased by his two younger brothers, Monroe and Fred.

The memorial service and burial will be private.

Dr. Carlow & Family,
We are so sorry to learn of the passing of your father. I get that he loved talking about his experiences in WWII ... My dad did too. Although it sounds like he lived a full life, it is still always hard.

I worked at Youth Centre in the 1970s. Mr Carlow was a wonderful boss. I can still see him nattily dressed in his camel blazer with a smile on his face. I have good memories of my time there. My sympathy to all of you. I hope your memories of this wonderful man will help you in the days ahead.
