Carol McGarry Obituary

New London - (Mary) Carol McGarry, 69, of New London, and Enfield, N.H., died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, in the company of her family.

Carol was born and raised in New London. She was the only daughter of Michael J. and Edith (Gilmartin) McGarry. She graduated from Saint Bernard High School and Brown University with honors. She enjoyed teaching high school English and advising yearbook students until her retirement from Ledyard High School a few years ago.

Carol loved entertaining family and friends. She was an avid reader, a devoted cat lover, and a crafter of treasured handmade jewelry. She enjoyed spending summers at her cottage in New Hampshire, where she relaxed with her family, friends and cats. Recently she had delighted in being a grandmother to two-year-old Benjamin Miller of Beverly, Mass.

She is survived by her only daughter, Seana (Eaton) Miller and spouse, Erin Miller, of Beverly, Mass.; and her close cousins, Diane Enders, of Uncasville, and Gayle (Enders) Clow, of Arnold, Md.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, in Saint Joseph Church, 17 Squire St., New London, with private interment in Saint Mary Cemetery. There will be a calling hour prior to the Mass at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Mary Carol and I were high school classmates. In remembering her now I can hear her burst of laughter and always pushing her glasses back on her nose!

What a loss. She was a great lady, and passed her values to her children. I still have fond memories of a pig-roast at her house on Montauk Ave....kp

I am so sorry for your loss. Mrs. McGarry was my high school English teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed her class, but more than that, she was my sounding board. I was comfortable with her, and I often found myself in her room discussing various topics. She was the only teacher who knew what was really going on in my home, and I found solace in being able to discuss this with her. Those talks were invaluable to me. I also remember her quirky car, which always brought a smile to my face. Praying for strength for you. She was an amazing woman.
