Doris Watson Obituary

Naples, Fla. - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Doris Behney Watson of Naples, Fla., who passed June 21, 2024, from complications caused by Alzheimer's Disease. She was born Dec. 13,1949, in New London, to Edward J. Sr. and Eleanor Pierce Behney.

She grew up across the river in Groton, the third of seven siblings. Doris loved the outdoors; she excelled at skiing, sailing, golf, and tennis, but she especially loved the beach in Groton where she lifeguarded. Doris attended local schools, and graduated in the Class of '68 from Robert Fitch High School. She went west to ski, and attended Colorado Women's College before moving back east to Boston where she completed secretarial training at Kattie Gibbs. She returned to Groton to work at GD Electric Boat submarine division where she was honored to christen a small submersible. Doris then attended the University of Connecticut receiving a bachelor's degree before moving back to the Boston area where she made her career at Textron's Gorham Manufacturing Company. It is in Boston where she met her husband John and later joined him for many years as a sales representative in the ski industry, before retiring to Naples.

Doris leaves behind her best friend and husband of 43 years, John Watson of Naples. She is survived by her sisters, Joyce Behney Gardner, Jean Behney and Helen Behney of Groton; and Kristen Behney of Melbourne, Fla.; brother Philip Behney of Stonington; and many nieces and nephews who lovingly refer to her as "Dor-Dor." Brother Edward Jr. predeceased her in 2021.

Doris and her husband John made a career of meeting new friends and considered them part of their family at Vanderbilt Country Club. Many of these friends supported her unconditionally through her illness. The family is particularly thankful for the heartfelt care from the staff at Amira, Avow Hospice, and the Alzheimer's Association. Private services were held in Naples.

It is always a sad day when we lose a family member. First I lost cousin Eddie and now cousin Doris. However, I still have many wonderful memories like when Doris taught me how to make spaghetti when I stayed with them in Needham, when she helped raised the rowboat that I sunk off of 3 Rock and all of the fantastic parties and Behney reunions we had at 47 Beach Pond Road. My thoughts and prayers are with John, Joyce, Helen, Jean, Kristen and Phillip. We will all miss Doris but will never forget all those good times we had together. May she rest in peace!

What a sad thing to find out about Doris´s passing. My sincere condolences to all the family. Thank you for the beautiful picture of Doris. She was a beauty! Also very much a "live wire" and always fun. We more or less grew up together in Eastern Point. (I was one class behind her.) I think we must have learned sailing together at Mystic Seaport. I certainly remember carpooling with my mother and Mrs. (Eleanor) Behney. I last saw Doris at Ed´s service; another sad and untimely occasion. It was good to speak with Jean and Phil at that time. I think of the Behney´s every time I go to Eastern Point Beach, which is often! All the best to all of you! It´s good to remember old friends, and poignant to mourn their passing...

My condolences to the Behney family. They were always smiling when they were kids. I was a lifeguard with Helen and graduated with Kristin. Big sister Doris looked after her sisters always and they were always together. I wish God's peace and grace to the family. Rest in peace.

To the Behney and Watson Families,
I was so saddened to read about the loss of Doris. I grew up in Eastern Point and would often see her and also graduated high school with her.
She was lovely and such a nice person with a warm, welcoming smile.
Rest assured, Doris is now in the arms of loved ones who passed before her.
