Ed Martin a great leader. He taught you by setting an example, not by ordering as a boss!
Ed interviewed me for my first job at Pfizer in Process Research Department. I knew, right then during our interview dinner (also accompanied by wonderful Jeannie (Ed's wife),Keith Blackwood, my supervisor-to-be (also accompanied by his wife Barbara, a superb lady), and Moyca (my wife) that Groton was going to be my destination. It was indeed one of the best decision that I have taken in my life). I interacted with a great number of talented people in various departments of Pfizer - learning how the whole world of steps involved from the discovery of a new medicine to its manufacturing after it was passed all the in-between hurdles of formula development and clinical and safety testing etc. We had a horrible vice president in the group to whom both Ed and Keith reported. But, Ed and Keith shielded us from the wrath of that VP. My wife being from Arizona, and Arizona being a far better place for our lifestyle and raising our two young sons, we left Pfizer after six great years. The heart of this story: both Ed and Keith continued their contact and communication with us until their untimely death.
Examples set by both of them have been guiding light for us!

Edward G. Martin was a devoted husband and father (and I expect a wonderful grandfather and great grandfather). Ed was a super boss and active community member. Ed organized my on-site job interview for an entry level Chemical Engineer position in the Groton laboratories in January, 1969, fifty five years ago. The interview process was so motivating, I altered my expected career trajectory. In June Ed helped me find a furnished apartment in Groton (Al Gilman convinced the rental agent to furnish the apartment for $25/mo. more). Ed assigned his long time, veteran laboratory assistant, Otto Gilcher to teach me the ropes. Ed was a soft manager, balancing experiential guidance with freedom for new approaches, coupled with timely, honest performance feedback to applaud the positive and develop plans to improve. I tried to emulate him and he was my mentor for 35 years, even after his retirement.... But that only tells part of the story. Jeannie and Ed Martin embraced my wife, Peg and I, also native New Yorkers to integrate into our new community. We could write pages about their help but suffice it to say: Jeannie and Ed attended the christenings of our two children and the weddings of our children.
May they rest in peace and Thanks,
Peg and Dan O'Shea

Growing up, I was a frequent visitor to my friend Linda’s house. I remember her dad as always cheerful, patient and welcoming, regardless of the pandemonium created by us kids! God bless his passing and his family.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your father was an amazing patriarch to a wonderful family. I will always remember the beautiful memories and kindness he showed to me. I still think about his squash flowers. He is at peace with his loving wife now and has transcended to a beloved ancestor. What a wonderful life he had and it should be celebrated. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Love you always - Sam
