John Ahearn Obituary

Pawcatuck - John "Scott" Ahearn, died suddenly, and unexpectedly Sept. 19, 2024. He was 65 years old. Scott was born July 29, 1959, at Norwalk Hospital, Norwalk. He was the son of Richard L. and Rita Y. Ahearn.

Scott grew up in New Canaan, with his brothers, Dick and Michael and sisters, Rita Lynn and Tara. He attended New Canaan public schools and graduated in 1978. While in high school, he excelled at lacrosse, wrestling, and hockey and played varsity sports for New Canaan from his sophomore year on. After graduating from New Canaan, Scott enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served with distinction from 1978 to 1982. He was assigned to the USS Midway Carrier group where he served aboard the USS Parsons in a support role. During his time in the Navy, he traveled all over the Pacific and Southeast Asia, with his final tour being in the Persian Gulf during the Iran Hostage Crisis aboard the USS Knox. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1982.

Upon discharge from the Navy, Scott joined the family Construction firms Ahearn Holtzman, Inc./Seaboard Weatherproofing and Restoration in Port Chester, N.Y. He had an exceptional career there managing many construction projects throughout the metropolitan New York area, with one of his favorites being The Bronx Zoo. He retired in July 2022, and looked forward to pursuing his many interests.

Scott was an avid sailor, boater and fisherman who spent most of his time on the waters off Watch Hill, R.I. He was a long-time member of the Watch Hill Yacht Club which is where he learned to sail as a child. He was "Uncle Scott" to his many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and was the "king" of the many nerf gun battles over the years. He was the "chill uncle." He was also the one who taught them all to fish and love the water. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, pickleball, golf, practical jokes, gardening (no weeding), the beach, fireworks and his family and friends. He was loved by all who ever knew him and will be fondly remembered for his joyous: "Whooo Hooo!"

Scott is survived by the love of his life, Cheryl Patton; his daughter Nadeije of Pawcatuck; son John James of Savannah, Ga.; his grandchildren, Harper and River Madeira, and Ruby and Ramona Ahearn. He is also survived by his brother Richard from Stonington; brother Michael of Austin, Texas; sister Rita Keenan of Austin, Texas; sister Tara Moore of Pawcatuck; and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews and nieces in Connecticut, New York, Maryland, North Carolina and Texas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place o at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at St Michaels the Archangel Church in Pawcatuck. A Celebration of Life will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to: St. Michael's School, 131 West Broad Street, Pawcatuck, CT. 06379.

I'm terribly sorry to learn of the sudden loss of Scott Ahearn! After relocating from New Canaan to Stonington, I always had it in the back of my mind to look him up. I met him through John & Derek Hoffman, as I was visiting Ned and Tim often during High School. I had supper in August with Leslie and Michael in the Borough. I'm sending love to each of you, Rita, Leslie and Michael, Dale and Dick, and the sister whom I have yet to meet. Scott was such a whirlwind of positive energy with a great laugh. I remember the two of us laughing so hard, on one occasion, when J&D brought him to my apartment for a visit in the 70's. God bless you and keep you all. Scott is with each of you - always - and I know we will meet our loved ones again. Much love, Milly Cookman Frick

We met Scott when he came to Rita and Bill's for Thanksgiving. Always a smile and so fun to talk to. Tossing the football around with the kids. We still laugh about the time he and Bill almost burned down the deck frying a turkey. He will be deeply missed and was much loved.

I met Scott when I worked as a keeper at the Bronx Zoo, and Scott had various jobs going on there. It was always a pleasure to run into him. He was never too busy to say hello, shoot the breeze a bit . . . even discuss work. I found Scott to be a kind and friendly soul, and am so sorry to hear of his way-too-early passing. My condolences to his family and friends.

I became a friend of Scott through the Bronx Zoo. After I retired we kept in touch. He helped me catch my first false albacore on his boat and my first lake trout. We talked a month ago and he was so happy with his life in Florida and the love of his life. He said when he came up next time we'd go fishing and maybe he'd dive for some scallops. Tight lines Scott

Lots of fun sailing and memories at the cabana's. Scott was trouble and was fun! We had some great times. Scott always had a great laugh and friendly wave. Will miss seeing your wave at the cabana's! Say hi to your Mom and Dad.

My first memory of Scott was him showing up at West School in New Canaan, CT with a white button down shirt and a Tie. That lasted about a week before his mom ( Rita) relented. He was perhaps the best kickball player in the school and excelled at all things sports and outdoor activity related. We had a lot of fun together throughout the years. Summers in Misquamicut, Staying in and out of trouble with The Twins-Derek and John. Usually more in trouble than not. He was a good kid and a better man. Scott and I were responsible for his brother Dick and my sister Dale meeting. He always had that crooked smile and there was always something behind the sparkle in his eyes. He was always in search of fun.

We met Scott when he bought his condo in High Street in Westerly. From day one he was friendly, funny and would do anything for you. Steve went boating with him and Scott loved to just sit back and let Steve handle all of it!! He loved that and so did Steve. He always remembered me and brought me truffles from the candy box. He loved my stuffed clams and begged for more. We will miss him much. He was a special friend for sure. God bless you Scott, you´ve gone too soon. Love Steve and Debbie
