John Grossomanides Obituary

Westerley, R.I. - John G. Grossomanides, age 97, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, in Westerly, R.I. after a long, distinguished life. Born July 11, 1927, he was the son of the late George S. and Mercina (Kyriazis) Grossomanides.

John was a dedicated family man, highly respected for his caring and kind nature, embodying true gentlemanly qualities. John graduated from Westerly High School and later at the University of Rhode Island, laying the groundwork for a distinguished career. While in high school, John was a member of the 1944 Westerly High School State Championship Baseball team where he was the starting second baseman and earned All-State Honors. Additionally, he was a member of the WHS basketball team.

At the University of Rhode Island, he majored in accounting. Additionally, he joined the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity and the URI ROTC program. Following his graduation from URI, he became a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. He served honorably in the Army for 30 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. One of his Army assignments was to serve as the State of Rhode Island Liaison to West Point Military Academy, assisting in recruiting. His commitment to service continued into his civilian life where he worked as an accountant for Electric Boat, a Division of General Dynamics, for 37 years and offered his expertise as a public accountant doing taxes for many people and businesses in the surrounding Westerly area.

John was very involved in his community and his faith. He served on the Parish Council of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Norwich. He served the Order of AHEPA as President of the AHEPA Chapter #110, District Governor of AHEPA District 7, and as Supreme Governor. He was the former treasurer of the Electric Boat Management Association and treasurer of the EB Retirees Association and served on the Supervisory Board of the Charter Oak Credit Union.

John was also very involved in the Masonic Order. He was a 40-year secretary of the Franklin Lodge AM #20, and 75-year member and Honorary Past Master. In addition, he was a Grand Commander of the Narragansett Commandry #27, and was a member of the Palmer Chapter and Charity Lodge. He was a member of Secretary Guild along with other memberships.

John leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Vasiliki (Celia) Grossomanides; and his son Dr. John Grossomanides; daughter-in-law Anna-Helene; along with his nephews: George, Costas, Steve and Clifford; and nieces, Marcia, Elaine, Kathy Sophia and Maria; and a large extended family. He will sadly missed by all. He was predeceased in death by his parents, George and Mercina; his brother Stephen; and sister Anastasia.

The Grossomanides family will greet relatives and friends from 2 to 4 and 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday Oct. 24 at Buckler Johnston Funeral Home in Westerly, R.I. The Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Norwich, followed by the burial at Riverbend Cemetery in Westerly, R.I.
